December, don't let people speak to you like dirt. He's just another clerical person, & whatever decision he makes can be overridden if necessary. They can offer you an appointment time, but they already know from your SOA that you are working, & whether they like it or not you have to work within the terms & conditions of your employment. If you were an ambulance driver, they wouldn't expect you to be prepared to say that you'd take the call & allow the patient to take their last gasp while you're being interviewed, would they? The same applies to doctors, nurses, shopworkers, most people - we all have our responsibilities, & while 10am or 2pm might be ideal for them, it's not ideal for you, so they'll just have to accept that.
This one seems like he's got "doctor's receptionist-itis" - by that, I mean the ones (certainly not all of them) who guard any appointments like their life depends on it & won't let you speak to the doctor or get anywhere without first crossing 10 rivers, discovering the cure for 5 major diseases & learning to write in 20 different languages with your left earlobe.
If you have a problem getting the time off, I'd send an e-mail to your OR & their manager explaining that it is difficult to get the time away from work, & give them alternative dates & times that would be convenient. Don't worry about being penalised for that - no OR (as opposed to the jobsworth you spoke to) & certainly no judge would ever think you in the wrong for trying to make sure you do your best by your job in what is already a difficult situation.
I'm sorry you had such a rotten day yesterday, but I'm sure tonight will be a lovely end to a much better one.

To cut a long story short I had a call today from the OR#s office from the person who makes the appointments. He wanted to book an appointment for Monday 9th June (or something like that.) I said that would be fine but at what time as I'm a teacher the answer was 10am, erm I have a class then. I then suggested varying days and times but said that it would have to be at the senior management's discretion as to whether I was allowed to have the time as leave. (big mistake in hindsight but that's the protocol and the forms have to be filled in and agreed before I can confirm that day/time is ok.)
Cue the OR's assistant getting rather stroppy and constantly reminding me that this is a serious issue (like I wasn't already aware of this) and that the interview had to be completed by a certain date. I had to explain I'm not trying to be deliberately awkward but his reluctance to book me in for any other time other than 2pm or 10am wasn't helping much although I didn't say this to him. We finally came to a suitable date and time (10am this Wednesday) with me agreeing to ask the school for leave of absence and him saying that Mr Smith would have to confirm that this was acceptable to him and then he says (after constantly telling me that it would only be for an hour, and asking what would I do if I needed a dentist or doctors appointment and not being happy with me answering that I would go after school) he then tells me that it will take longer than an hour. Oh SMT are going to love me on Monday and how the OR will probably think I'm a right cow when the appointment person tells them on Tuesday. I genuinely wasn't being deliberately awkward but the way he was speaking to me like I was and like I shouldn't dare to ask about when the OR works didn't help.
Yes I know it's my fault I'm going through this and I know that there are things that I would do differently (ie ask for help from my family instead of blindly carrying on) but I'm paying the price for that. I've had a totally rubbish day, feel incredibly down and like I should be wandering the streets in a sack cloth and ashes being called scum. I feel so low I don't know how I will get through the next few days I know this probably won't help those of you going through it and I'm sorry for foisting my depressing feelings onto you. It's just that right now I just feel so alone in this and I know this probably comes across as a really self pitying post and I'm sorry.

Come on Honey Bun .....chin up. It'll get better. I think you should though speak to the OR about the way his assistant treated you.

Hi December,
forget about the past just think, you are not going to have anymore debts to worry you and life will be easier.
These ISO guys think we are not fighters you see! and treat us a bit like idiots, as i said to the guy who dealt with my case (a total jobs worth and really rude)this is a temporary set back not a career choice!
I think you are doing a fantastic job and the fact you are still working is commendable.
We may all be in a bit of bother but it doesn't mean we have to bow down, life still goes on and they have to fit into your life pattern you still have to put food on the table and work life dosen't go on hold for the ISO!
Good luck and remember the whole fourm are behind you and if you need to have a rant here is the place to do it.0 -
worse week of my life, bar none, and im old, so when i say that i do not exaggerate
