Had it on a new lappy for a week and really pleased with its performance until this morning.

I downloaded Service Pack 1 and it screwed my internet connection and made IE hang after every 30 minutes, requiring a full restart.

I have now unsinsatlled SP1 and its back to normal. Although i am now concerned as some of the updates would hav been critical for security. May consider going back to xp but would prefer to stay with vista
was SP1 on the up-date or did you just download it...as they have been having problems with it and stopped it from download last month...

Well I have 2 computers, one with XP, one with Vista, give me XP any day, Vista is so bloated.

I think I will upgrade it to XP.;)

then you should get in touch with M$ and ask what went wrong...mine was an up-date when it was launched but I never had any problems with it...I know they did have a problem with it and thats why they took it off auto up-date and said they wouldn't put it back on until they had a fix for it maybe you have to get to get the fix off M$ as well I would go to help knownledge and put in problems with SP1 and see what that comes up with...although my pc worked just fine without it and no different with it...so there you go...do you need it or dont you...

I've been avoiding vista, gave it a go when it was new, wasn't impressed.
Now about to put together a new PC (Q9300 + 9800GTX) and I guess its probably time to go 64 bit OS, and as XP 64 sucks big time, so vista here I come (I think)

Unless you're running more than 3Gb RAM it's probably not worth it. Or you could at least still stick with XP 32-bit.

I personally quite like Vista. Your spec will be more than capable of handling it. It does need customizing a bit, and turning off of some services, but once all setup it's quite nice.

Having said all that I'm on 64-bit Ubuntu

Do your research, if the hardware you're planning to install has mature x64 drivers then there's nothing stopping you reaping the benefits of what x64 offers over x86. It's a great operating system, so ditch the outdated architecture ;)
