broadband through extension socket?

i'm considering signing up to broadband. my phone line for the internet currently comes in on an extension lead (15m) from my main BT connection - two other phones also share this main BT socket using a socket tripler.
I read somewhere that there maybe problems experienced with speed / connection if using broadband through an extension lead -is this true?
Also, what is the deal when it comes to using the adsl filters with the socket tripler & extension lead - how is that set up?
also, how are waitrose & virgin.net rated for broadband? i'm looking for an ISP with no 12 month contract or a 1 month contract?

Yes, ADSL quality of service can get worse over an extension due to the poor quality of the line, and interferance it gathers along its route.
If you have a phone at the end of the extension you will connect your ADSL modem to, then you need to put an ADSL filter at the end point of each of the 3 points coming out of the tripler.
If you don;t have a phone connected to the extension you will have the ADSL modem connected to, then you could put a filter at the BT master socket, put the ADSL modem extension lead into the ADSL socket of the filter, and plug the tripler with your two telephones plugged in into the "Phone" socket of the filter.
If you get a poor service via your extension, then you could consider getting a Wireless Modem/Router, and connect your PC(s) wirelessly.
Hope that helps (and makes sense!).
P.S. Virgin.net went downhill when they were taken over, hence my departure in 2004. Don't know about Waitrose's service - not sure who's service they are reselling.
I'm currently with PlusNet 2Mbps (starts at £14.99). Migrating away to Be* 24Mbps £20pm (with approx 18months free due to referrals so far), and also got a Bulldog 8Mbps connection being installed to test their service out - I'd avoid Bulldog until they sort themselves out (poor provisioning of new connections/lines, and poor customer service).

I have a similar set up, I initially purchased a 15m phone extension cable but the adsl filter has to be plugged in the actual socket on the wall with the tripler (and ultimately everything else) plugged into the filter itself.
A way around this is to buy an extension modem cable which you can plug directly into the filter at the site of the actual BT socket. I bought a 20m one from Maplin which wss £19.99.
Hope this helps0 -
I have my router on the third extension - no problems good 2Mb ADSL but I live a milke from the exchange
Extensions will add noise and increase attenuation but if you are close to the exchange you won't notice itTANSTAAFL !0 -
Or you can get someone to make you up an extension made from Cat5 cable instead of normal telephone cable. This will carry the signal far better with much less interference. This can also be used for normal phone extensions. The cable quality could make a lot of difference. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I'm approximately 1.5 miles from my local exchange - is this considered close?
What sort of download speeds should I expect using the 15m extension lead with a 1mb broadband connection?0
