What pension? State or occupational or... ?

My pension is a government one, and each month I have it paid straight into a French account. The charge is £1 each time.

I'm not in a position to advise on any other kind.

  • Apparently you have a very good exchange rate if you have your State Pension paid into an EU account. Wouldn't know though, we had ours (Government) pension paid into the Co-op and transferred it ourselves as and when, was never brave enough to trust the vagaries of the Spanish banking system.

You might have people who know more on the French section of www.britshexspats.com

  • We both have state Pensions and Hubby has a works Pension also. I will look at that website, thanks for that. £1.00 sounds a reasonable fee. I know some credit cards are zero charges but not debit cards which can be expensvie to use. Likely we should still keep UK Bank anyway as well as a French one. Our Spanish Bank in San Jaun was very straightforward and helpful but some people I recall had nightmare problems with some Banks.

As an expat who lived abroad for 15 years, there are some things that are much cheaper in the UK, and worth stocking up on when you're back rather than getting relatives/friends to send them! Might sound obvious, but you'll spend a lot less money trying to find the equivalent in the country you've moved to, which will almost never be as good. Also, be sure to sign up for a credit card that has good airmile rewards as well. This can really add up!

Welcome to the thread, mcmack. :)

Don't be shy! Tell us where you lived abroad, and as time goes by, you might like to recall your experiences and continue to pass on your hints and tips.

  • if you are moving abroad, yet have a uk based pension then securing good rates for regular international payments is a great way to save money. i have found that Baydon Hill are as good as any of the companies and the staff are always helpful.

    Pinguguy, welcome to the thread.

Unfortunately, there are some companies who see MSE's massive membership as an excellent audience for their advertisements. Your first post on MSE is reminiscent of posts made to obtain custom.

Perhaps this isn't the case, and your post is simply a good tip. So could you add a bit more detail? And, since this is a thread about living abroad, perhaps you could let us know where you live (or have lived) outside the UK.

Why is Baydon Hill good? In what way is it different? Is it part of a bigger group? What have you used that company for exactly? Why should we choose it over the various other companies who are specialists in transferring money overseas at competitive rates?

No, sdw was well south of there. The views on Spectrum fm on Facebook could have been taken from my terrace though - I sit and watch the sunset over Bedar (not there at the mo). Very frightening for all and hope the damage wasn't too bad.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

No, we were well south and west of there:

(although this map has it a bit too far north!).

There have recently been bad fires around Yegen, as well though. :(

A dry winter and spring and now the hottest summer for years have made it very vulnerable to fire.
