Gatita - Thanks very much for the link. My friend is going to 'phone Maria, one of the lawyers on that site, and see what she's got to say..

Seven-day-weekend - Thank you for your very kind welcome to this section of the MSE forum. :)
I have seen one of your threads - you've got a lovely house in one of the villages in the high Alpujarras, haven't you?
..I didn't know it was possible for a private individual to approach the Land Registry directly. That could be worth trying; thank you.

The registration problem has been put on hold, as first the Catasto has to be corrected (the last thing my friend wants to do is to register his neighbour's house in his name!). The correction is expected to take four months, and another 300€ bill. In the meantime my friend is planning to take all his paperwork down to the specialist solicitor in Algeceras, and see what she says about it all.

Thank you to everyone who has commented on my friend's problem - for the benefit of anyone else in a similar situation, I'll let you know what happens (eventually ;) ).
