SDW I read something in a paper in Spain last week about Gerald Brenan - is it an anniversary or something?
I would move my village nearer (it's 20 minutes there but seems a lot longer back), and close down the English bar with loud music & bad food. And give my favourite Spanish bar some outside space. That's it really.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

AFAIK it is not an anniversary, however the Spanish respect him greatly and visit our village on coach trips to look at his house (the back of our house overlooks his garden).(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

Thanks for the welcome--Turkey has just emerged from a near head on crash between the gov and military-as you might know.--The Gov won and they have reiterated their commitment to join the EU--i live in a big city which is opposed to anything the current Gov. wants and people generally think despite what the politicians say full membership of the EU will never happen -The French and the Germans are in open opposition to it with their overt declarations of negatitiveness toward it happening--business people that support the Gov want it to happen but the people where i live just see that it will cause inflation and the populace will pull the plug if there is a referendum on it.
İt is a cheap place to live but there are lots of restrictions put on foreigners but you can get round them with laterall thinking--work visas are hard to get and costly--My wife is Turkish and we own our a language school--i just consult!!-We live in the city in winter and in a beach resort in summer--the cost of houses is kept low by mortgage rates of about 20pc and maximum loans of 5 years.--it makes more sense than adding 000s to prices and having to take endless mortgages.mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0 -
Thanks for the info. It's always good to get the real deal from the inside. I'm always suspicious of news as reported by the big companies.
I can't speak for Germany, but there does seem in France to be quite a lot of negativity towards Turkish entry. People say that it is to do with different cultures, and at the moment there is a lot of suspicion of Islam. France already has its problems in reconciling Islam with the non-secular nature of the State, as seen with the to-do over the Burqa (as in Belgium). And, of course, there is inevitably some distrust (call it racism, prejudice, hatred, or whatever) amongst the indigenous European French towards North Africans, and I'm afraid the Turks get drawn into that through religion.
Good luck with your business. It must be fascinating to operate in such circumstances.Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930 -
Just catching up with the comments of the last few days.
Everyone is different and it easy to misunderstand each other, as someone's rural is empty to an other.
Living in Luxembourg, a very small country I appreciate how small the UK is for example compared to France or Germany.
France is empty compared to the UK and moving there can be a shock to many as to how empty it is.
I think too many people have visited a place in Europe many times on holiday and have then moved there. They are then surprised how different it is in the winter.
Europe is no different to the UK in one way. Great Yarmouth is busy and lively in August but is a VERY different place in January.
We are city folk and need the things that a city offer. Luxembourg fits the bill ideally for us.
However we also like the sun and sea, hence a holiday home in France (83) However the Mediterranean is not inviting in March.
We have just returned from 7 days in Tenerife and were very impressed by the weather. We swam in the sea which was great in March. It also was very good value for money as prices are being squeezed by the recession. We are likely to go again.
Anyone thinking of moving should NOT buy a property but rent for a year (at least)
I should add that City's only change a little with the seasonsThere will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.0
