Living abroad tips and hints for money savers

One of the main reasons for selling up in Florida was because we cannot be bothered to learn all the tax/wills legislation. Plus everything you do here requires a Social Security number and if you do not have one (which we do not) everything comes to a standstill! Luckily we have had a bank account and credit card for years because I am not sure we would get one now.0

Hi Mrspbradley - yes it is a pain - imagine trying to do it all in a foreign languge!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
SDW, I am so happy for you! :j I went to my tax office yesterday because I have heard nothing about my first French tax return (2007), which the accountant (295€ ) says has been sent to them twice. There was no record of their having received it!
I need a French equivalent of Carlos.
There is no emoticon for tearing your hair out, so :wall: is the closest to how I feel.:hello: Life is mostly one solvable problem after another.0 -
Oh Carrots, I hope you find your Carlos - or should I say Charles - soon.
It is a great worry (at least to us it is) not knowing if you are legal or not, and not knowing where to go to find out, nor having enough language skills to always understand what they are saying back to us, especially if it is financial, bureaucratic or technichal language.
Still, that's a load off (to quote Jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets).(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Might be cheaper to set Droopsnout on with his knowledge of French, she says and she goes and hides.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?0 -
UK Govt pensions eg civil service, teaching, local authority pensions have to be taxed in UK
Wouldn't it be great if all the EU countries did the same stuff? The French tax people want a complete breakdown of all income in the UK, taxed or not.Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930 -

I've often thought it would be wonderful if all the EU countries played by the same rules.
And if we were covered for healthcare in whichever EU country we happenend to be in.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

At last I'm allowed to post here! Fifty last year, and trying hard to make the best decisions for the future, a retirement may be on the horizon.
Me and the boss have been frugal and canny for years, paying extra mortgage when we can, no loans, etc. We will come into some cash this year which will pay off most of our remaining mortgage. So we have a bit of spare money each month soon.
I will be working for next 5 years full time, then maybe part-time as I'm self-employed. The boss, older and wiser (she says), will be able to retire on council pension in 5 years. Plan is to live part-time in Spain in winter, returning to work here in the spring/summer/autumn. Rent property out in the summer. I know, I know, heard it before!
But we need some advice: we like Andalusia, especially Banus, Ronda, etc but know we can't afford to buy there, we will only want to borrow about GBP100k. I want to sail a bit, so need to near sea/marina, but realise inland is cheaper.
As prices appear to have fallen drastically, is this the time to buy? Where do you live? How are things? New or old?
The advice on the web is so sales based, are there any good websites or forums for us to get sensible advice?0
