I've PM'd you. However I can only tolerate the stuff heavily disguised in coffee, DH will have an odd small glass occasionally, we have it in the cupboard and there is usually stays.

No worries. There are other drinks available: Vimto, Tizer, Dandelion & Burdock, Sarsaparilla ...

  • Hi there folks - back in town. I have just waded thru all the posts since I left and I am in a state of shock. I feel so sad that our happy family is heading for such a miserable Christmas and financial disaster. As I have come to 'know' you all so well it has made me very sad. I think that the emphasis people put on Christmas re expensive presents, stuffing themselves till they burst and the general excesses of the average person is sickening. The true meaning of Christmas has been totally lost. Luckily I only have a few more days of this mass hysteria before I settle down to enjoy my Christmas, a visit to my Mum in her care home and back for lunch for one at home. It will be peaceful and enjoyable (and cheap).

As everybody is being so honest I feel I can tell you that my own pension from my 30years of working in Holland is paid into my UK bank account in Euros!!!!!! Yes, the lower the pound goes the higher my pension. it went up £40 in November. Please don't scream at me. That will compensate for the extortionate gas and electric rates, food and the rest.

I feel it is not a good time to talk about my holiday - maybe tomorrow.

Hey, we're not that gloomy - even if the pound fell yet again today!!

I've had quite a nice day - thanks mainly to receiving an extraordinary Christmas gift which was a total surprise.

Hope your hols were great, and am looking forward to reading the highlights!

    Sirop?? Tu parles français?

Sarsaparilla ... Oh the nostalgia ... The smell of it wafting across Blackburn covered market ... Or in the Temperance Bar in Rawtenstall ...

    Ruddy disgusting stuff.

Don't they call it "root beer" in the States? Or is that something else?

Edit, to answer myself: Sarsaparilla is made from Sassafras and is indeed known as root beer in the USA. The Temperance Bar in Rawtenstall is the last surviving Temperance Bar of 24 once owned by the Fitzpatrick family. Vimto was also sold in Temperance Bars before it became more widely available.

  • Thanks Droopsnout, maybe it was just reading all those pages of woe - it saddened me. I didn't think it was right to come tripping in with my holiday indulgence. Funny thing Christmas. I have spent the last two with my BIL and his family on the ski slopes in Austria. They are (were?) going to Poland on Sunday and I opted out in favour of sun, and now they tell me there is no snow yet so they might not go. That would really have ****** me off if I'd agreed to go and it was cancelled.

I feel I should make a few extra bob by opening a book on the value of the pound tomorrow!!

    Starting point is:

    1 GBP = 1.05898 EUR
    1 EUR = 0.944301 GBP

Is there anyone who'd like to put £100 on it being up tomorrow?

    No. Thought not!
