Think Barclays were very upfront about this and it is a bit unfair to castigate them for charging what they gave detailed warning would be charged.

I think you'll find what the OP and many people on here object to is the amount of the charge in relation to the breach, not the fact it was levied.

I believe all Barclays customers were sent a letter with details of how the personal reserve was going to operate and the charges to be levied should the personal reserve be used. There was also a tear off slip to be returned, prepaid postage envelope should you wish to opt out.

Think Barclays were very upfront about this and it is a bit unfair to castigate them for charging what they gave detailed warning would be charged.

LOL bit of pontification on the day that the Archbishops of York and Westminster have indicated that people in the financial sector are indeed Bankers!
  • hi

I have a direct debit set up on my Abbey basic account which is for £1, i recently changed my account to Halifax and forgot completely about this direct debit mainly because its for such a small amount.

each time the direct debit has come out of my account it has been reclaimed by abbey who have then charged me £15 this has happened 3 times so £45 later i'm confused how can they charge me this much for 3 pound and to complicate matters further i moved home back in april and though i have tried 6 times abbey still send letters etc to my old address where my ex partner is living so by all means at the moment i'm rather irritated and not entorley sure what to do next.

    any advice is much appreciated.

  • Dear All,

As a Barclays customer of over 10 years, i have recently been dismayed at their new reserve policy and intend to warn you all, especially if you are a Barclays customer!

I received a letter a couple of weeks ago explaining that as a valued customer they had automatically implemented a reserve on my accounts (x2). i didnt really understand the real impact of this and didnt think anything of it until we recently went overdrawn by £7.00 for less than 24 hours! yes a whole £7.00!!! within 24 hours we were charged a whopping £22.00! So, in good consumer spirit we contacted Barclays to reclaim our money. I was told that i effectively agreed to the service, which they had very kindly imposed on my account without my permission, and argued that i was effectively paying for the service and therefore couldnt claim our money back! We were put through to a manager and was advised that Barclays are forcefully imposing these charges on their reserve usage accounts!!

It is quite clear that Barclays has implemented this new "service" on to all of their current account customers without asking, in an attempt to avoid repaying further bank charges! sneaky i know! You HAVE to tell Barclays you dont want this "service" otherwise you WILL be charged if you go overdrawn and you cant claim them back on the basis that it's a service you've consented to as you havent said otherwise!!!!!!!

Be warned, Barclays have formulated a cunning plan to try and avoid the bank charges claims!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I queried this with them last month after spotting it on online banking I told them my husband and I hadn't asked for this. As yet have not received a letter or any information on it.

  • In the letter they sent was a tear off slip to opt out and a postage paid envelope. I read the letter containing the proposals, decided I didn't need the reserve and sent back the slip. Be fair, they did explain what they planned to do and gave you the opportunity to decline. I saw nothing sneaky about it.
  • hi

opt outs are shady at best. if you want a service surely you have to ask for it.

I agree with Borgbaiter, most people would've ignored the bumpf they sent out about it, it looked like any other normal advertising.

As i understand if you then go over the reserve amount, you will then be charged about £8 as a penalty fee. If you opt out of the reserve and still go over, will you only be charged £8 still? Only an imbecile would keep the reserve facility.

Barclays charged me the magical £22 for going into my reserve, but that ame day, they increased my overdraft limit and i didnt have a reserve set up on that account??? Haven't quite got around to questioning that one yet.

To me Barclays are setting up for failure at the courts, by finding a different and "fairer" way of imposing charges on the poor.

i recently went into my branch to extend my overdraught on my student account [by £300] due to a problem with my student loan being processed.

i filled in their forms and the woman said they will go through and if there are any problems, they'd write or phone me, but if i didn't hear anything, then i'd be fine.

i leave the account for a week, using other money i had to live on.

i went to the cash machine a week later and low and behold, it's letting me withdraw money.
i hadn't heard anything from barclays to say that they couldn't increase my overdraught.

i have come back from a family trip to ireland to find several letters from barclays telling me they are adding £22 charges to my account every week for going into my personal reserve.

would i be able to claim these back, as i thought i was using overdraught money, rather than personal reserve, which i would never have touched.

    thanks

Always check your balance before you withdraw, The banks will mostly let you take money whether you are in your overdraft or not as they think yippee we can now charge them loads of money.

Yes request the charges back, best way which worked for me is writing to barclays head office they refunded them as a gesture of goodwill but you can't make a habit of it or they will say start saying no.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!
