The Best Student Jobs

Hello All,
I've recently begun a post graduate Masters (no student loan, horrendous fees) and need to supplement my parental loan with an evening job.
Here's my situation:
Long distance girlfriend who I'd like to visit some weekends.
9-5 labs monday to friday followed by one hour commute, so I'll be lucky to start be free by 6.30
So my question is this. What jobs would be suitable for a man in my position. I'm ideally looking for 2 or 3 evening shifts a week starting at 7, and nothing to strenuous, as I'm basically working full time on my course in a lab. I've had some cracking suggestions which I thought I might share, but I was hoping that the forums might be able to deliver some unique and great ideas.
Here's what I've got
- Tutor - I've got a degree in science now, so feel I could confidently tutor maths and science to GCSE level.
- Stacking shelves in tesco/morrisons etc.
- Life drawing model - Hmmm, not for everyone, but apparently pay is reasonable
- Maning the phones for the NHS
- Video store
- Hospital porter
So... any thoughts? I'd appreciate even the most bizarre suggestions if they're for real!

Usher in a theatre if you have one nearby.
Best part-time job around for students in my opinion. Start time around 6.30 finish by 10.30. You'll normally get paid a set 4 hours for all shifts even where the show only lasts 1-2 hours. Duties include showing people to seats, sitting down for a bit, selling some ice cream, sitting down for a bit then head off home. Maybe a bit of cleaning up involved.
Sounds ideal for someone like you - get paid a set amount, not a lot of work (can have a doze if its not too noisy) won't work every weekend get paid even if no show on - some theatres pay for atendance at 'trianing evenings' when no shows on!
Only downside is you'll need to see some awful shows and according to my mate - drunken women!0 -
I know I want to try and get a job at the royal albert hall. Going to Imperial so it is opposite me!0

You could also try working in a restaurant/bar as the shifts often don't start until around 7-ish. Pretty straight forward work & you can earn tips as well which can often make a huge difference to your overall weekly wage

Transport work is also a possibility for an evening shift, back at home I worked 5 - 8.30pm for a local transport company doing basically data entry.0

Hello - sorry this is a little off topic but have recently seen quite a few data entry jobs advertised & wondered exactly what it entailed? Is it just that, inputting data & that is it?CrispyUK wrote:Transport work is also a possibility for an evening shift, back at home I worked 5 - 8.30pm for a local transport company doing basically data entry.
Thanks!0 -
It will vary - I've used data entry as a very general description of my job. My main role was getting our customers consignment notes and entering all the details onto a bespoke system, address, number of pallets, weight, service, etc. A lot of the information was on the paper, some you had to know. This was Transport Clerk though and I ended up doing general admin work and various bits and bobs, some IT purchasing & support and in some cases running round the yard sticking labels to pallets as well.Loopylou wrote:Hello - sorry this is a little off topic but have recently seen quite a few data entry jobs advertised & wondered exactly what it entailed? Data entry generally is what it says on the tin, although it will vary from position to position, the best way to find out/be sure is to ask exactly what's involved.0 -
if you dont have a criminal record and are able to get a sia badge you could be a door supervisor mostly evening work nothing to strenuous unless thers is a fight:D0

And women are meant to make pretty good door supervisors as they generally manage to defuse situations before they escalate into fights!barjam wrote:if you dont have a criminal record and are able to get a sia badge you could be a door supervisor mostly evening work nothing to strenuous unless thers is a fight:DSignature removed for peace of mind0 -
i would advise avoiding 'door supervisor', the pay is good is for a reason!! Ok in some areas the risk may not be as high but my brother used to do this part time. Bouncers are always gonna be a target, and drunk people with inhibitions lowered etc. can be crazy, going to all extents. My brother quit after another member of staff ejected someone, he collected his mates and followed the bouncer home, where 5 drunk men attacked him in his own home!! As for woman door supervisors - we all know how bad cat fights can be!! lol0

Data Entry would be my suggestion too, my last job was just that, the most demanding of which was Worldwide Entry as it required me to go to the warehouse and check the dimensions and weight of many of the packages and then sort out all the paperwork before inputting them into the system. However it was a 5-9 job and even though most of the time we finished just before 8 we still got full 4 hours pay (not gauranteed though, they were trying to throw more work on us to keep us going until 9). I unfortunately now have 1 day a week where my lectures go on until 6 so am unable to do it every day, but I might see if I can get it for 3 days a week.0
