    Hi

I am new to this, and have recently started home baking again thanks to you guys. :T Would love to give this a go. I have a question, how do you get your freezers and store cupboards bursting? Is it a case of bulk buying at the start or just constantly adding as you go along.

    Thanks

It amazing what passes for cookery lessons isn't it
my niece is 13 and when she has cookery -she gets her hair off as she learnt to cook with me and her mamma from being a tot... so now when she is at school she get into allsorts of scrapes for declaring "thats not right" "thats not how its done properly" -and she is usually right :rotfl:
The other day they were told to take in a pack of digestives and some tubes of icing  learning to decorate them will really keep her healthy and well fed when she goes to Uni.... im just glad she has learnt with us:D
I had to tell DS1 when he had Food Tech last year to just do it the teachers way at school and not worry if it didn't sound right.

They made fairy cakes and she had them mixing the flour and fat then adding in the sugar and egg, I know it sorts out in the end but the whole point of creaming the fat and sugar is to get sir into it.lol!!

My first ever cookery lesson at grammar school was to take in apacket of blacmange and the milk and we made that. I had been cooking full roast dinners etc at home for at least 2 years prior to this.

    Hi everyone,

I made 2 yog cakes and 16 yog buns last night cuz had 6 yogs bought on bogof going out of date - they were diet and yuck! How long can I keep the cakes for as the use by date on yog is now up? Bit confused. They are yum tho! sent OH to work with one doubt any will come back.

Forget the usedate on the yogs-it no longer applies. Keep out the cakes you know you will eat in the next 2 days and freeze the rest. They keep fine-if you cant freeze them due to lack of space-even if they go dry you can use up in trifles or with custard.
If you store them in a tin or plastic box dobnt leave them too long s they wont keep for ever. I freeze my surplus while its still very fresh.

Ruthibe73 It says on the packet to cook red lentils for 30-40 mins. That might be why they tasted a bit gritty to you. I never use them because I like everything to be cooked in 20mins.

Glad they liked them scotsaver :)

    Here's the recipe egon

Cheesy Biscuits - Makes about 20 Ritz sized biscuits

    50g SR flour
    25g butter/marge
    80g grated mature cheddar
    splash of milk

Mix all ingredients together and knead a little until you have a ball
Roll out to about 2 1/2mm and cut into stars/rounds
Bake at 200c/Gas6 for about 8-10 minutes until they start to colour
They will still be quite soft but they do crisp up a bit more as they cool

The original recipe said to add 20g Parmesan and a pinch cayenne pepper too but they’re just as yummy without. You could use an egg yolk instead of the milk to bind.

    Hello

NSD for me yesterday, spag bol for tea stretched with extra carrot and some lentils. Is it me or does anyone else find red lentils make it a bit gritty? I did rinse them first, did I over cook them or not cook them long enough (20 mins). Should be another NSD today as I'm at work and can't spend anything! Not sure what to have for tea tonight, I sort of meal plan (well Sunday is roast, Monday is roast leftovers, Tuesday is Sausage, Wednesday is Meat free, Thursday is Mince, Friday is Fish and Saturday is Pick n Mix!) This way I know roughly what to cook but it is very variable and can be adjusted to suit us.

Mouche our butchers do chicken mince but they do a minimum of 3lb at a time as it doesn't mince well if you only want 1lb, we do have to request it though as it's not something they seem to have ready done. Might be worth enquiring again.
Lentils may be undercooked but the red ones are the softest. If they had been overcooked they would just turn to mush.
Green and brown lentils are grittier and take longer cooking. I always find they all take longer than it says on the packet.

This bit about dates on yoghurt - does that mean that I can use the remainder of the stuff that I've currently got in the fridge (it's been open for about 4 days and unfortunately the date was printed on the foil lid that I've thrown away - it's got one of those see-through plastic tops on it).

I'm very reluctant to throw it out and wanted to use it up in a yoghurt cake before opening another carton of the stuff. My son is going mad for another one of these as the last one was so delicious.

Morning:D just milk needed today, no pay yet, moving in two weeks so the freezer is being emptied, there seems to be so much in it though, does anyone know if I don't get round to using the frozen pastry jusroll, will I be able to take it to the new house with me and re-freeze it? It is not as if I can make pieswith it as I can't freeze them because I need to empty it not fill it up again:D
Victory, does the freezer have to be off for more than 6-8 hours? As when we moved the removal firm put it as the last thing on the lorry and first off, so it was unplugged just before going and plugged in pretty much as soon as we got to new house.

They even wrapped it in blankets.

I moved with a freezer full of meals etc so i didn't have to worry about shopping for the first few days.
