    Good for you trashcan.

I am not sure why you want a bankers draft? Most individuals and companies are more than happy to accept a BACS transfer which you can do via online banking from either your Barclays and (most if not all?) Building Society current accounts.

  • First of all I think you mean cheque not check.

To answer your question yes Barclays can arrange a bankers cheque/draft for you but expect to be charged around £20 for the pleasure.
Do you have a current account with Barclays as well as your saver?
If so transfer the money from the saver to current and issue a cheque at no cost to you.

barclays charges £10 for the draft.

I have had people in the past ask for a Building society cheque and not one out of my cheque book in payment.
Now all my accounts are online except for my Barclay's cheque account. My original question was if Barclay's writes cheques for you and if so, do they charge. I pay bills through BACS transfer, but I did not know you could pay individuals this way.

    Thank you for your advise.

In my limited experience with these - the general rule appears to be that if you have access to a cheque book with your Bank .. they will charge if you ask for a cheque / Draft from a savings account with them. If all you have is a savings account ... (but it normally has to be Branch based) they will issue a cheque / Draft free of charge.

That is not the case these days Mike.
Banks want to open current accounts for customers so that they can cross sell other products (you can't set up a D/D from a savings account).

So someone with a savings account only would have to pay for a bankers cheque or draft because the opportunity to have an account with a cheque book is there.
The only exception to this is the basic/cash account. Many banks don't offer counter service to them anyway, but if they did want a cheque they would have to pay.
Banks are very mercenary these days!

I'll defer to that. I did say it was limited experience. Last time I tried to get one out of Halifax the above logic was put across .... so I just paid for the car by Debit Card!
