I found a local shop here that will make "show" plates. They just put a sticker on saying "not for road use". The plates themselves are made to the legal standard, just without any documentation.
Personally I think that non standard plates are exceptionally naff.Happy chappy0 -

Ok, in a nutshell:
A registration plate is not a registration plate unless it bears the British Standard mark BSAU145a or BSAU145d.
It must meet all the legal requirements regarding font, spacing, background, size etc to be stamped with this mark.
If you monkey about with the characters, and use a show plate on the road, the plate will be illegal and there is a small chance of you getting a fine. This chance obviously increases if you commit other offences (e.g. speeding), and attract attention to yourself.
You can have a show plate made up to display your number correctly in all aspects other than the British Standard mark. Although technically not legal, you would never be stopped for this. Even if you were caught speeding they would not check the plates as they meet all the requirements other than the BS mark. Since the BS mark can quite legitimately be on the back of the plate, officers would not check. Even if they realised it was not marked with the BS number, they would not take any action, as in all other aspects it would be correct.
Get your plates made to legal specifications (other than the BS mark) anywhere you like - you'll be quite safe. I'll even offer to pay your fine if I'm wrong. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
It's about £7 per plate at the independant place.Happy chappy0

I'll second this, I always buy my plates online as it's cheapest, and least effort
I've bought loads of plates and the places that don't need the v5 is always the cheapest0 -
I buy perfectly legal number plates on eBay for half the money Halfords charge, I don't have to drive 16 miles to get them, they arrive the next day, they have the BS Number on them, they also have the DVLA Registered Suppliers name on them.
Excellent quality as well.;)0 -
