This need to pay is becoming a very common misconception and a frequent query on here. Might a sticky be in order?
There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

I must say I am impressed with AVG8. No problems here
    so far.

A new feature I have noticed is when I do a google search
through Firefox it tells me if there are any threats within
a webpage, so I know to avoid.

    Nice:T

... as does McAfee Site Advisor ( Free ) which doesn't take all day to load like AVG 8, and gives far more realistic results.

I thought it was a money making scheme for avg. I thought AVG was the best free scanner and the smallest in terms of memory footprint etc...

I have been migrating PC's i manage lately from AVG 7.5 to Avira Antivir simply because AVG (version 8.0 at least) just isnt cutting it anymore after using it for 3 or more years.

    1. Antivir's engine is the second best on feb 2008 testing here so why not use the free version that uses the same engine?

    2. Memory Antivir uses far less memory than Avast or AVG.

    3. Fast scans

The only downside is the annoying pop up during update but this can be disabled easily using Windows Local security policies you can find that info here. At the end of the day though all free versions of AVG, Avast and Avira work and are more than fine for everyday use for most people.
