For those reading this who don't know what performance costs, a single 6-7,000 Pound database server can be expected to handle at least a couple of million transactions per day (at average rate of say 20-25 per second). Many more with decent disk controllers with write caches. But you'd actually want at least two, better three, of them for reliability during hardware failures. RAM-based databases with disk backup can do considerably more than that.
FPS system handles around 700 TPS
The current ATM switches handle around 300TPS
Both run on HP Non-stop Systems formally known as Tandem.
They literally are non-stop - and cost a little more than a few grand!
Non stop hardware using non-stop Applications over secure resilient fault tolerant networks.
These are services that people take for granted and have to be available 100%0 -

Viper_7, no surprise that moderate transaction volume applications with high reliability needs like that are using those boxes, particularly in traditional banking cultures. They have a superb and well deserved reliability reputation. I doubt that anyone would want to be seen to be doing something different in this case since it's the well known gold-plated solution. And I suppose the natural development target for software vendors.
anniecave, A&L hasn't yet shown as accepting faster payments to my current account there. May be that I haven't checked at the right moment since I usually do it during the night.0 -
The 13 banks included in the Faster Payments scheme are: Abbey, Alliance and Leicester, Barclays, Citi, Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks (National Australia Group), Co-operative Bank, HBOS, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, Nationwide Building Society, Northern Bank (Danske Bank), Northern Rock, and Royal Bank of Scotland Group (including NatWest and Ulster Bank).
Here is a Sort Code Checker, if you're not 100% sure!

Hope that helps.
I think I will have to set-up a new bank account and try to unpick all the links that feed into Abbey. I'll see what Martin recommends.0 -

This was not the case for me. Three weeks ago I tried to send £1,000 from Barclays to Halifax. It still took three days, despite both the sending and receiving sort codes being listed on the APACS website as being part of the FP system.0 -

Barclays are only operating a restricted service currently, limiting the amount you can send, see post 1 (repeatedly updated) of http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/....html?t=9854630 -
FP payments to BM from HSBC were not showing up either same day, rang BM they said they were having problems accepting FP's, but will be backdating all credits to the day they were supposed to come in
I understand BM can't send FP's out, but what I was surprised to learn was they do not allow you to take out monies (from eSaver2) as CHAPS either, ONLY via 3 day SO
Make's one wonder if their putting in safeguards against a possible run on the bank, or am I just getting paranoid
