Well I'm not normally a sucker for gimmicky things and to me, a cable is a cable, but when we were choosing our TV, DVD etc in the shop, we got them to do a comparison and we could see the difference, but hey, it's just our own experience, plus we got the cable for a reduced price coz we were spending a bit of money with them.

For our other TV and DVD at home, we use a regular cable. We have the gold plated one on our new TV.

"Edit: although gold plating should cost you an extra quid or so, anything more just for that is significantly ripping you off."

Gold plating really isn't expensive at all and so for having that as an advantage should still be a relatively cheap cable. Probably shouldn't need to spend £10 absolute maximum on gold plated HDMI, unless the cable for some reason needs to be really long.

Jennyw, Did they show you the differece between two HDMI cables or the input between HDMI and scart/composite/RGB/RF??

I cannot understand the difference from HDMI at £5 or £60 each.

that's why I mentioned the price of £212 for the Sony and the gold-plated HDMI cable - they are selling it for the price of £10 which is much cheaper than some I've seen (like £60)

Although I think gold plating will make a difference in the signal you can get gold plated HDMI for about a fiver so I have to agree, I don't see how the "£60" cables can be any better.

Although you can get them for less than a tenner anyway. You don't need to buy equipment just to get it discounted.

but we didn't spend £60 on the cable, I think my husband haggled it to £20 due to our purchase with them so compared to buying a standard cable, it really wasn't that much money in the scheme of things. I wouldn't get the GP one if it was for our portable  But when you spend £700 on a TV then £20 for the cable, isn't that bad.

We got them to show the difference between a regular HDMI and GP HDMI cable. We took our own DVD discs along so we could see recorded programmes as well as regular films. But as I said earlier, this is based on my own experience.

Not true. There is a genuine difference in picture quality from different quality cables. There's LESS of a difference when it's a digital signal but it's still noticeable. That being said though I personally use the cheap !!! cables because I don't think the difference is worth the extra money but there is definitely a difference.

NO offence but I have been a AV engineer for 10 years, I know what I
    am talking about ;) .

You can clearly tell if a HDMI cable is faulty or not upto the job as you will get VERY noticeable picture distortion so if you don't get that on a £5 cable your getting exactly the same picture quality as if you had bought a more expensive cable.

Of course when some poor soul has just spent £40 on a cable in Dixons
there brain will want to believe its better than than free HDMI cable that
came inside the box, but in reality it wont be.

And what really gets me is some of these "premium" cables are not even
well made the money is spent on the fancy packerging and marketing
you will not see any professional engineers using these cables , they will
be using the likes of Molex cables where the build quality and durability
are what your paying for the not the " 24K Gold Oxygen Free Kryptonite Cable"

Heres a post from a Electrical engineer who explains why more expensive doesn't = better picture

No I appreciate that, but I was just commenting on the fact that if the OP was going to purchase that particular SONY DVD from Amazon and "did" want a GP HDMI cable, then it would be a convenient way to do it.

I was only trying to offer my own experience  I'm sure the OP will make his own decisions

Last week the Gadget show tested HDMI cables. There was no picture difference.

I can only assume the "cheaper" cable they used was faulty somehow or the picture wasn't actually being sent through the HDMI cable.
