Sky - extending cable to another room

Hi,
I have a sky dish in the downstairs living room.
I'd like to bring the cable to an upstairs bedroom as the normal aerial won't work.
To save costs, can I do this myself? Is it possible to cut the cable outside and get some sort of splitter device and then wire in a new bit of cable to take it to the upstairs? If so, please can someone suggest what type of splitter/cable I would need to make this work and where to buy?
Many thanks.

You can't use a splitter and feed to another room. You would need a quad LNB and a new length of cable from the dish to the second room. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
You will find you get much better reception if you take the dish out of the living room and put it on an outside wall ! (Sorry -couldn't resist that one !)
You will also need a second sky box - and card !0 -
Oops! Yes that didn't make much sense did it!! I think my brain is fried from a marathon weekend of non-stop DIY....
I know I'll need another box and card, I have this - does this mean that I can cut and extend the cable if I have a second box & card? I'm not currently subscribing to Sky, it's just that the dish is here and I'm watching the channels I can get with the card.
I didn't really want to fiddle with the connection at the dish itself in case I damage that and end up with no Sky at all!! So I thought cutting the cable with one feed into the living room and one upstairs might be the answer.
What is an "LNB"?
ALSO, in the living room there seem to be two cables (identical) coming in off the Sky dish at the same point, why is this and could I extend one of these and take it upstairs? (In case you can't tell I'm new to the world of Sky!)
Thx again.0 -

No, you need a new cable back to the dish and a new LNB ( the bit on the end of the dish arm e.g. here

Low noise block (the bit that receives the signal reflected from the dish)

Yes if you already have two feeds from the dish you could try an extension cable e.g. here
Thx again.
.......Have fun! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
This might not be what your looking for, but what about one of those " signal sender things? i believe you can watch a channel from your sky box in another room, without the need of another sky box, and rewiring. I might have the wrong idea here and sorry if i have. ive think ive seen them on sale somewhere.
When ever i learn something new  it pushes
something old out of my brain :eek:0 -

looks like it was used for sky + if you have 2 cables from the dish into same room.
you can extend the spare one to another room and use it with another box mind make it a good connection. If you dont like me remember its mind over matter, I dont mind and you dont matter0 -
Depending on your sky box, you may not need to buy additional box. My sky box has plugs on rear to run 2 cables off to another room.I currently have cable runing to sky box from dish and a cable running from the rear of box to upstairs bedroom.
Gives me sky to bedroom although if anyone changes sky channel downsairs, channel natuaratly changes in bedroom.
You can also purchase item called magic eye which plugs into rear of the bedroom TV with sky cable plugging into the eye.Allows you to use sky remote in your bedroom, hence no need for second sky box.Magic eyes and additional sky remotes dirt cheap on internet auction sites.0 -
when you see a sky engineer near your property ask if he wants a backhander i bet you will get a new lnb and box for £80 installed professionally in your bedroom
the cost of the bits and your time alone is well worth itneed to have a lightbulb moment0 -

In your opinion but this is a money saving site!

I just did this with a sky+ box, running a cable from the appropriate socket on the back of the box into the kitchen, having drilled through the wall. I also fitted one of the aforementioned magic eye widgets to the kitchen tv, so we can now control all the sky functions with the remote in the kitchen. Bear in mind, however, that you cannot also have the normal channels through an aerial, that has to be disconnected. I put a splitter in originally to give some versatility, but it wouldn't work, so both tv's show the same program. I can't even watch the footie in the kitchen while OH watches brain-dead soaps. Had I known.....0
