Can anyone answer any or all of the following: Whats the worst that could happen if I used the software anyway? Should anyone other than me take responsibility..I've read about 'grey areas' in licensing agreements? Have you had this problem & how was it resolved? Have you any suggestion as to the cause of the original problem with the computer? Have you any experience of Scan Computers..? I've seen them referred to as Scam Computers although loads of companies sell OEM. Should they be expected to comply with the refund under consumer protection legislation or is there no real fault? Sorry for the length of the post but I'd be hyper-obliged for any input..
OK...
Firstly, just tell them it's installed on a new PC and you'll be OK.
Secondly, with OEM there's no support so you can forget getting any from MS.
Scan are a box shifter. They're really mainly supposed to be trade suppliers but delved into selling to anyone. As there's nothing wrong with Vista, what are you going to claim for? You asked for OEM Vista and you got that. It's not even booting to the point where Vista is the problem so you can't say the software is faulty.0 -
why are you making all those assumptions, the OP clearly stated whether mistaken or not that;
A, it was an HP oem version he had been supplied with
B the computer powered up, then shut down
The OP did not clearly state that he had bought a HP machine from scan, nor that it wouldn't boot at all, just "no safe mode" etc
Making assumtions and getting it right comes with experience. You should try that instead of picking up on what other people say all the time, we're here to help.- Google is your friend, use it :rolleyes:0 -

getting lucky has nothing to do with experience m8, your read far too much into what was said therefore not asking relevant questions and i asked why, supporting my question only.
Yes you are right about trying to help and i applaud that but sometimes its better to ask rather than tell, that's all i was sayingclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
Hi Anselm, Did you use heat sink compound between the cpu and heatsink?
Recheck cables. Remove anything not required to boot the pc. Are the drives jumpers set correctly i.e. CS on all devices?
Power cables fitted to video and MB?
Did you read the manuals?0 -

if the cpu and heatsink(hs) where also second hand that is a very good question,
new ones come fitted with a layer of paste on tape
could also be the hs is not quite lined up properly and sitting half on half off the cpu, they are a !!!!!! to line up in shuttle cases, also can actually "roll" up the pastetape preventing proper contact between cpu and hs, remove, clean with spirit and apply fresh pasteclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
Hi guys, & thanks for the comments. Conor, I agree theres nothing to claim in as much as I got what I asked for hence the OP; I feel stuck between Scan & MS but really all I want is a working computer. The CPU is new. I have dismantled the cooler to remake the joint and the paste was evenly spread over the cooler base, not bang in the middle but an even square nonetheless. I am as certain as I can be that all cables, plugs etc are fully secure but I cannot say about jumper settings. As I put the parts together & they worked ,at least at first, I thought I wouldnt change anything until later. One mistake I definitley made was not investigating why it didnt boot normally while I still had access to safe mode
. I'll try disconnecting the reset too but I still think the problem must lie in the soul rather than the organs. If I'm right is it possible to restore the BIOS or jump start it somehow into safe mode? Many many thanks for your time

yes if the bios has corrupted it can be restored using a boot disk and copy of the rom but at mo not sure why you feel that is necess and it's ertainly not recommended
If you had the ability to do the install it may be a problem with your memory, try obtaining a memtest bootdisk and giving the machine a "burnin"
to establish if the machine is reasonably power stable leave it sat in the bios temperature monitoring(pc health)click here to achieve nothing!0 -

I guess you should probably not tell me how to help people then. I'm not your "m8" and I'm not interested in arguing with you. Not that there's an argument to have.- Google is your friend, use it :rolleyes:0 -
Hi mdbarber. The memory was suspect #1 when the shut down problem started while I still could boot from safe mode so I bought another pair of 1gb. Corsair (they'll go in the next build if I dont sicken myself with this one), so I'm reasonably confident its not the memory. I would love to be able to PC health check in the BIOS..I would happy if I could power up & not have almost instant shut down
. Kind regards

Have you got a spare psu to try, will a standard atx psu just sit by the case? and have the req'd connectors damm shuttles some use standard connections and some don't. if so try it just to rule out any problem or affect there,
It does sound like an instance i had recently where a known pc manufacturer had shipped a system with the wrong bios and looking at your mainboard it appears there have been a lot of bios updates.
Only problem with that is your system is so unstable any attempt at flashing may kill the board dead.
Perhaps if u can boot long enough to see what bios revision you have and send an email to shuttle tech support to see if that version supports your cpu.
if you then hear back it doesn't ,best advice is to try and find someone to borrow a compatible cpu to perform the flashing with.
As i said if done wrong you will kill board and they ain't cheap so be careful and rule out all other possibilities such as psu, vga card etc firstclick here to achieve nothing!0
