Where should these be packed? - In case or hand luggage?
Haven't been abroad in 20 years, since I was 9
(all together now, Ahhhhhhh lol) so I'm not sure.
Aerosol cans - hairspray/mousse/deodorant etc
Electricals - Iron/Kettle/Hairdryer etc
Also, I've got costume jewellery I want to take as I don't want to take my good stuff, but would these make the metal detectors go off?
*Has visions of my knickers and pill packet flying in the air while security are hunting for the 'bleep' culprit :silenced:

I always carry anything I can't afford to lose in hand luggage and everything else (including lethal sharp objects like nail clippers) goes into the checked luggage.
Otherwise just look at what Easyjet say - http://www.easyjet.com/EN/Planning/baggage.html0 -
Thanks Alan, will have a look at that nowTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0

You will be surprised, but from items you list the most problematic to carry in hand luggage is ...... iron
.
Passengers' sharp reminder. (BBC)
Metall detectors will go off every small piece of metal, but you will be given a special box for all such items before going through a detector. This box will go through a separate scanner together with your hand luggage.0 -
Yikes!
Time to unpack and repack me thinks! LOL

If you are carrying coins in a trouser pocket, these will set off the detector. If you are wearing a belt with a metal buckle, it might set off the detector. If you have a key/keys in your pocket, the detector will be set off. These are some observations I've made on my travels. Trays are provided for keys/coins etc.
Make sure you pack sharps (scissors, tweezers, safety pins, sewing kit etc) inside your checked in suitcase, not in your cabin bag. I put all mine inside a clear plastic pencil case and then it's easy to spot inside the suitcase.;)
Make sure you pack your flight ticket, passport and other important documents in your cabin bag/handbag.......with any medicines or other essential items.
If you are wearing a jacket or coat, you will have to take it off and place it in a tray with your cabin bag or handbag/wallet/keys/coins etc. The tray goes through the scanner, then you collect the items once you've walked through the scanner. If the scanner beeps, you'll be frisked by a security officer (female officers for female travellers) but it's nothing to be apprehensive about.
If you are a nervous traveller, don't make the mistake of lightening the mood by joking about security matters. When you're asked the security questions, don't joke about weapons or bombs.........YOU WILL BE ARRESTED.

I tend to keep a carrier bag with me and empty and coins/keys/anthing else in my pockets into that. I then pop that into my hand luggage and let the whole lot get scanned together. Still got stopped at Heathrow last month though - seems it was my shoes.
So try to minimise the inconvenience to you by putting your valuables where you can retrieve them quickly. It would not be the first time that I have seen people walk off leaving things in the trays. And do not worry if you do get stopped for an extra check.
I did have to strip down to my undies once (behind a screen) when they could not work out what was setting the detector off. The security officer passed my clother through the main scanner one-by-one until something activated it. If none of them had, then it was going to be latex glove time. Thankfully my hat was the culprit. Now they make you put hats through the bag scanner, so that problem should not happen again.[size=-2] If this post was unhelpful, please tell me.

Just being nosy, but why all the electrical stuff - Are you not coming back or are you going somewhere that you can't buy them or rent them?
Can't say that I've ever taken anything bigger than an battery operated toothbrush or gas tongs - always stayed somewhere that there's a kettle etc.
Plus they are flippin heavy - rather pack more shoes - LOLNoli nothis permittere te terere

I think the exact procedure must depend a bit on the airport/staff/luck...
Recently I flew from Stansted to France (where I was working for the summer) - I was wearing steel toe cap boots (as they were too heavy to go in my luggage!) and a belt with metal clip - the security guy didn't seem particularly bothered when I told him about the boots, he said I could take them off and put them through the X-ray if I wanted, but he just made me walk through the scanner, it beeped, and he waved his wand over me to prove that it was the belt and boots that were causing the beeping.
Flying back from France they made me take off anything metal - including belt and boots - and put them through the X-ray. I forgot about my stainless steel watch but it didn't seem to set the scanner off - I guess small amounts of metal are OK.?
Also make sure if you have camera film or a disposable camera or a camera with film in it (apparently they are still used in this digital age) that it goes in the hand bag - the X-rays used on checked luggage are too strong and could fog the film.

Some high heeled shoes/boots set the metal detector as they have metal in the shaft.
After a few times of setting it off with my shoes/boots, I thought I was being savvy by taking my boots off and walking through the detector in my socks. I didn't set the detector off, but the lady called me over for that test where they pat you. She said it was because I was wearing wide legged trousers and sometimes people fasten things to their legs! Here I go again on my own....0
