Post Office - Not enough stamps!

Hi,
A few weeks ago I posted an application form off somewhere, however today Royal mail have sent it back to me as there was not enough postage on it!
They are now charging an extra quid on top of what was originally missing even though it wasnt my fault
Oh and to top it all off, even though the envelope had 'Strcitly confidential' on it, Royal mail still ripped it open to find my address - at least I have it back with my details.
Not a major vent I know but still annoyed me!

What size was the envelope? If it was over a certain size then you have to pay extra postage. What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0

How's it not your fault that there wasn't enough postage?0

so it didnt have enough postage?
the letter was pulled from the mail system and passed through the charging system then to buisness replies then to the delivery office
a charge card is issued, correlated with the letter at the delivery office, then the card delivered and the letter filed
the recipient didnt accept and pay the postage(im guessing 6p) plus fee(£1)?
you didnt put a return address?
so RM sent the letter to Belfast to have the letter opened in the only place legally allowed to do this( you accept this using the postal service)the RLB office costs RM an absolute fortune
would you prefer your item destroyed and you are on here moaning your item was lost/stolen?
then the letter is redirected back to the sender
a card is issued and delivered, the letter is filed in the delivery office
now do you think that costs less than £1?
this happens with millions of items
its been like 2 years since the new pricing structure and every day in my office alone we see easily 300 underpaid items
either with no postage or insufficient postage
just the other day one of the local buisiness owner came in(a regular charge payer!) and paid for 6 items
all apprenticeship applications
he paid for them and said these would all be getting rejection letters regardless of what was in their applications0 -
Two things spring to mind;
1 - if you want to ensure items of mail aren't opened in situations like this, make sure you put a return address on the rear of the envelope.
2 - you say it wasn't your fault there wasn't enough stamps on the envelope; did you put the stamps on yourself, or did you take it to a Post Office and have it weighed/sized there?Regards,
Ash0 -
The op doesn't say whether there actually was enough postage on or not.
Recently, my niece posted a letter to her grandma asking her if she could visit on a particular day. The card was lightweight and massively within the smallest size, yet grandma received a card from the PO asking her to collect the item from the sorting office. Grandma, who's in her eighties and not very mobile, traipsed across town and paid the extra fee, to make the discovery that not only had the PO erroneously targeted the item for the charge, but had held on to it for several weeks, thus missing the requested visit.
She complained and got a book of stamps - not even worth the journey to collect it.0 -

It was likely a pre-paid envelope with a first class stamp on it.
However blaming the person/company who gave you the envelope isn't the point. It is your responsibility to check that any item you post has the correct postage on it. Therefore if in doubt get it weighed.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

the machines can make mistakes, unfortunatly i dont have time to check over 300 a day.
however when someone comes if for a charge i will check its weight/size if i think its possibly an error.
mind loads of cards are underpaid due to thickness with those little trinkets, badges etc0 -
Wish our PO was like you custardy - no-one noticed or cared that the letter shouldn't have incurred a charge - I took it to work and measured it on the template, photocopying the evidence before they would agree.
It's not the first time either with our PO.:D0 -
pah ,say that to the people ive argued with this week
we have all new managers now(long story) and theres loads of changes
one being all packages require ID for collection (i know it should have been that anyway) but the tantrums we have had are unbelieveable!0
