It is really upsetting this , it happened to me , and you feel that it has gone through twice but then you think (typical british way) that you are just making afuss). I would give them a bit of grief people should not be treated like that. Money back and compensation ie a voucher for them having your money and your distress.

    Demand compensation!!!

  • To be honest cashiers are often over worked and doing a very repetative job I often just switch off without knowing....that aside still not good customer service to be snappy.

Having said that,if she didn't scan the items twice then usually (from the system I use) the screen on her till will have just stayed the same after you entered the pin, meaning to her it would have appeared it wouldnt have gone thru (most of the time on the system aswell)...so it was probably a computer error rather than human.

Having said that it IS embarressing for a customer so personally I try to keep it quiet and investigate....tho this really annoys people in the que!

So, could anyone recommend the best way to retrieve my £92? Should I deal directly with Homebase or with my bank (Abbey)? Never had to do this before! If I went back in to Homebase, what could they actually do? All I can take with me as proof will be my bank statement (which I can print out online) showing the double debit. I don't know the easiest / bestway to do it....Have to wait until Tuesday anyway.

Thanks for all your comments everyone!

I would say your bank, tell them you only made one payment and it has been debited twice.
This happened to me very recently too.

Well in that case can I have compensation from you because I don't like your point of view?

Yes, of course I will get it sorted out, but it's just extra hassle and I didn't realise until today when I checked my bank account. Good thing I did! Never happened to me before! Thanks for your comments everyone!

Partly her fault for not asking/getting a receipt... its all about paying attention to detail

DID NOT MEAN TO SAY THANKS-hit the button by mistake. I think MSE has gone way down hill if this thread is anything to go by.

Why if a store has hold of your money £92 for any length of time due to an error on their part should a person not seek interest/compensation for their time and trouble to get the money back.

This forum was set up for the man in the street to have some clout against the big high street stores power!!!

It is not acceptable for a person in a store to treat you and your money as a customer with other than the highest standard of care. Perhaps if we all politely insisted on this more often life in Britain would be easier.

So her till is a part of her body attached to her by an umbilical cord?

Around 30% of people seem to believe a till is an extension of a cashiers body over which they have full control!

Technology can go wrong. Machines are not attached to humans to the extent that errors which seem to be unknown are psychically transferred to the cashiers mind so they automatically know that it has definitely made an error and can correct it.

Until you can get your head round the fact that a till is not part of someones body then it is not their fault when it goes wrong or does not state that it has gone wrong to the person using it, then your above quote is a complete load of idealist rubbish!
