Does this sound wrong to anyone else?

Briefly:

Paid £179 for a service - whilst filing paperwork realised needed MOT.

3 days later MOT (at same garage) fails as brake discs and pads "unsafe". Pay another £290

Now i have a service sheet in front of me that under "safety checks" says the brakes discs have been checked and passed.

Phoned garage to say why did you pass brakes if they weren't safe and their reply was that they couldn't tell if they were safe or not from the service.

So what am I paying for and why are they called safety checks? when pushed it looks like I have paid £179 for oil and water change.

Is it just me or is this daylight robbery?

Daylight robbery. In a £179 service, the wheels should be taken off and the brakes inspected with an advisory issued if the pads are below 3mm.

    Yep Daylight Robbery.

And £290 for Brake pads and discs seems a rip off as well. What car is it?
  • Thanks all

Car is Peugeot Partner (postman pat van)

Thanks Conor for that information. The woman we spoke to today specifically said that the checks were visual and that the wheels were not removed.

Is there somewhere that sets out how services should be carried out?

its normal that lots of garages dont remove the wheels to inspect brakes , but they must be pretty bad to fail an mot so thats pretty poor

all you can do is not go back and spread the word to all your friends etc

Not in a service it isn't. In a service, unless it's a basic £50-£60 fluids one, the wheels are removed every time. When I worked at a main dealers every single type of service had the wheels off.

the brakes are only a visual inspection on the MOT,but they also put the car on the brake tester to test efficiency, this is probably why it failed, but how they come to the conclusion its the pads and discs without removing the wheels is just a guess.

the prices for the service was about £50 too much for a service without the wheels off.
and the price for the brake pads and discs sounds astronomical, what car do you drive?
was this done at the main dealer?

If you are in the aa or rac it might be worth getting an inspection done, you migt get the cost of the service back if they find its not done properly.

Visual? Are they referring to the MOT or the service? On the MOT they do not remove the wheels and look thru to look at brakes. On a service, they should remove the wheels and have a bl**dy good look!

I'd kick up a stink if I were you.

  • Again, thanks all.

We are about to kick up a stink. It is the main peugeot dealer and just having a few people on here say that it sounds dubious has given me the confidence to go back to them.
