Oh and as an afterthought has anyone discovered if this device actually has an over heating indicator?,

According to the Miele manual for their current generation of vacuum cleaners, some models have an indication, others don't (depending on model), however, all have a thermal cut-out (as I would suspect most vacuum cleaners, of any brand, do).

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

so just for arguments sake if there was an indicator and it wasn't working would the charge have been fair?
or even if there was no indicator and miele failed to check for this over the phone, would that be fair? how much technical knowledge is the average vac user supposed to have?, perhaps the OP was dyslexic and couldn't read the manual would that be fair?

I cannot understand how a 3 amp fuse, therefore under-rated, would lead to the vacuum breaking. If the vacuum drew more current than the fuse allowed the fuse would simply blow.

Unless of course the problem is the vacuum was perfectly fine, but Miele received it with a blown 3a fuse in the plug.

I think you're splitting hairs now. Weather the indicator existed and/or was/wasn't working is irrelevant - OP had put the wrong fuse in the plug contrary to the advice given a) on the plug and b) VERY early on in the manual. Had Miele found another problem things MAY be different, but from OP's silence on the matter it would appear that all was a fault was the fuse - otherwise the vacuum was operating as per the manual (i.e. cutting out on over-temp)

I'm pretty sure one of the first things Miele would ask (before paying to have the vacuum cleaner collected at their own expense I might add) is:

"have you followed the advice in the manual?"

I wouldn't have thought that not being able to read the manual would cut it (unless they brought this to Miele's attention when they phoned, when Miele undoubtedly asked "have you read..." in which case I'm sure Miele would have taken the time to explain the relevant points)
