As others have said..the ad said 4 good tyres, you bought it,took it away and then found a problem. the seller has no proof you didnt damage the tyres or that you even swapped tyres from another car. i dont see how you have any comeback

As for new ones ring round a couple of tyre depots to find out prices , if you are not doing a lot of mileage then budget tyres will suffice

Cars need tyres. Buy yourself a pair of new boots for the car and enjoy the car.

£100 is enough to buy two decent tyres and have them fitted.
I use blackcircles.com (online booking of fitting centre).

The car was cheap enough anyway, so I see no reason to ask seller for contribution.

The bit where the seller put "four good tyres" could have referred to the tread, rather than the sidewall and they could act dumb in a Court and swear blind the side walls wern't damaged. You buying the car is your way of accepting it's condition. However, if you don't use the car much then get some part worns for about £20 per corner.

The wording 'good; could also have related to the make - ie a well known brand - or that they passed an MOT - not really relating to the life left on them.

I recently bought a 9 year old Mondeo for £460. The ad said it had "four good tyres", but in fact the two front tyres need replacing. So my moral quandry is this: should I ask the seller for a contribution to the cost of the new tyres? I don't think she was trying to cheat me; the tyres were nearly new, they just have a gash in the tyre wall.

'Good' is a pretty vague term when it comes to this sort of thing, as other posters have pointed out. Buying a car privately puts most of the burden upon the buyer, so I doubt you'll have much luck in the way of legal recourse, even if theoretically you should.
And secondly, I've never needed to change the tyres on a car before. Can anyone suggest how much to pay? I've heard that £50-£100-ish would buy you a reasonable set of tyres. Should I just pick a random garage?

    Thanks all!

Check out http://www.protyre.co.uk; they have a good reputation for doing a decent job of fitting the tyres they sell and they're usually pretty competitive on price too. If you order from blackcircles.com, you can probably get your local Protyre branch to fit them, but if you go directly to Protyre, they'll probably match or beat the blackcircles price.

I always fit middle-of-the-road tyres to my cars as I consider them to be an important part of keeping a vehicle under control in the event of unpredictable road conditions. For my Mondeo, I've gone with Continental Premium Contact 2, which are about £70 each, and are well-respected when paired with the Mondeo, giving a reasonable balance between life and decent grip. I've also used Goodyear and Dunlop in the past on other vehicles.

I bought my tyres for £20 cheaper than Protyre fitted on Blackcircles and the local fitting centre was.....protyre.

Either way, Protyre are very good.

O'm afraid I'm going to disagree OP you are buying a second hand car from a private seller and it will be sold as seen. It is your responsibility to check the car throughly before parting with the money.

So if yo plan to have an argument with seller (which I presume your not) then you might be disappointed and any legal action would bee doomed to failure.

The other point is you have bought a banger and you pays your money and takes a chance.

As I've said, it was a cheap car and the seller wasn't a dealer so I don't think I will pursue it.

However, I definitely could. I'm surprised that so many money-savers are saying I couldn't!
