I dont know if this is posted in the right place. DD (8) has come home & has been asked to research an make a Roman artefact for Monday ! Well we went on the internet to get some ideas and there are some fairly easy things like rings and bangles, but apart from that I'm flummoxed ! Neither of us are arty/crafty and we always struggle with things like this, can anyone help ? Please !

How about a vase/urn? You could make it using paper mache over a balloon, then add a handle. See the one in the foreground in this picture,
http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/bristol/news/ART36479.html?ixsid=
Blow up a balloon until it's the size you want, then dip strips of newspaper into wallpaper paste and cover the balloon in layers.
You could stick a piece of card to the balloon first to make a flat bottom and maybe make a cone to go on top of the balloon to make the neck of the vase.
Leave to dry overnight. To make it more robust, add more layers. When it's thick enough, paint it and finally, pop the balloon.0 -
If you could get hold of some air-drying clay, you could make a little oil lamp, that'd be fairly easy.0

Well Monday is Bank Holiday and also half term for many so that at least gives you and extra day or possibly a week....
How about making a small mosaic out of a broken plate... you could make it into a tile shape and stick them down with tile adhesive... or you could even use a paper plate as a guide to stick them on... or get a small 4 x6 picture frame and just use the glass as a backing and stick the mosaic into the frame..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

lots of newspapers ripped into bits, some wallpaper paste, a bucket, and a big space that you don't mind being covered in gunge!
soak the newspaper into the wallpaper paste until you have thick gooey newspaper, then layer onto a blown-up ballon & allow to dry.
when dry paint / decorate, then varnish if you have time to preserve it for the journey into school.
have fun

Thanks everyone for your replies. Unfortunately we don't get the Monday holiday here & as we're out on Sunday, it only really leaves tomorrow aargh !! I may go for the air drying clay, like the stuff from ELC ? I think a vase would be the easiest option ! grrr kids homework ends up being done by parents ! Thanks all

A fairly easy option would be to make an old scroll. Take a piece of white paper, get your daughter to copy out a short piece of latin onto it then age it. Make it look a little ragged and stain it with old tea/coffee. A chunk of this might do: http://www.thelatinlibrary.com/ovid/ovid.met1.shtml
Alternative include a paper machee mask as used in roman theatres. Blow up a balloon, make face with exaggerated features (so audience can see), pop balloon after mask is dry and paint.
Or make a wax tablet. Make a basic frame out of wood, melt candle, pour wax into frame, leave to cool. Or cheat by making frame out of cardboard and filling it with white/pale plasticine rolled and cut into write shape.
I did all of these at school. Personally I think the scroll idea is your best bet.0 -
How about making a little 'flute' fashioned out of a piece of bamboo cane (the sort that most people have hanging around in the garden somewhere).DFW Nerd 941 Proud to be dealing with my debt
