my friends find it weird that I talk about the sort of funeral I'd want (I don't talk about it all the time obviously)

I'm 35 and healthy and I think it's easier for us to have this sort of discussion now, rather than in an emotionally charged state if I was ill. I really don't want my family to spend a lot of money on a funeral, so I want everyone to know that it's what I want - rather than accusing DH of being a cheapskate!

I have vivid memories of my Dad having to organise my grandfathers funeral and trying to guess what he wanted. I think it's more loving to let everyone know in advance. I like the idea of a cardboard coffin - did anyone see them on TV the other week on "It's not easy being green"?

I believe medical science can be quite fussy about who they experiment on after the original owner no longer requires the outer shell.

I have probably read it in the paper or on the internet but I think you have to be below a certain age to qualify. No doubt someone knowledgable will be along shortly?

It's two years this month since my mum died, she carried a donor card and always told us the bits the hospital did'nt want were to go in the wheelie bin until monday morning.
We did not find her till the following day, they said it was to late for any donor parts to be taken, and the bin was already full that week.
We only had a simple funeral and cremation and it cost £2250. She would have been horrified at us spending so much.

I looked at cost of ecofriendly coffin some years ago and it was more expensive than a 'traditional' one.

Not so nowadays, you can get a cardboard coffin (not as cheap and nasty looking as you'd imagine). We used this very nice lady for my gran's funeral: http://www.naturalendings.co.uk and she'll do whatever you want to do for your "loved one". Some of the eco-friendly ones are as dear as the traditional ones, but (especially the wicker ones) look so much nicer.

After telephoning funeral directors and getting quotes between 2k and 3k I decided to search the net.
I am expecting that I will have to arrange a funeral in the very near future and found quite a big difference in funeral costs and services provided.
The cheapest funeral service I found was around £500 but that did not include a funeral (as such) just the disposal of the body without a service.
The best traditional funeral service I found was Classicfunerals.co.uk - I have spoken to them and they do a funeral for £750 - with all the other fees added that comes to just over £1450
I have decided that I will go for them when the time comes.

I recently attended a friends funeral in Solihull, West Midlands. The service included a civil celebrant and was probably the most unique funeral i've ever been to.

The funeral director that carried out the funeral is allegedly the cheapest in the area at £950 + disbursements.

The family were over the moon with the service they received. :T
  • One of my husbands distant relatives died approx 5 yrs ago, she was not in the slightest bit religous, there was no will and her son and her had not seen eye to eye for many years, she died in hospital and the son asked the hospital if they wanted her body for medical research - they said yes!!!!

No funeral, no nothing - not to everyones taste I admit...........:eek:

Since my last log in I arranged my aunts funeral - We had a Humanist Minister, it did cost a bit more but it was well worth it; It was the best 'send off' I could imagine and I can recommend classicfunerals.co.uk they did what they quoted on the net £750 + disbursement. The only problem is they only cover a small part of Yorkshire and I wont be able to use them for my husbands side of the family as they live near Hull.

There's a great funeral director round here who does anything you want and quite a bit cheaper than other companies.
We also have a "Coffin Shop"so you can walk in have a look and buy one off the peg as it were. There's every type of coffin and funeral urn and it's a very relaxed atmosphere.
Some of my family are in the despatching business on the front line in the crematorium and cemetaries and to be honest talking about death is something that's very normal to us.When you have the family birthday parties in the cemetary house at the local crematorium(no barbecues though, that would put the passers by off) you learn to realise how very close we all are to the edge and I guess it makes you think and appreciate life more.
I think it's very important that people are aware of what you want after your demise,it's much easier too.
