Some PAC Questions

I'm wanting to port my number from Vodafone to Orange. So I need to phone up Vodafone and ask for my PAC, that's the bit I understand. Can I just get it over the phone or do they post it, or what? How long does it take to come? My new Orange phone should be here tomorrow, and I think I have seven days to activate it, is that right? Once I have my code and give Orange the number, do they tell me the date my number is going to be transferred? Before that happens can I just carry on using my Vodafone phone and SIM, or is it my Orange one I use?

I'm so very confused, I hope the questions make sense, any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: Just found the retentions number and have now got my PAC code. Bless her, she tried so hard to get me to stay. I would've if I hadn't already bought my new contract. I know it takes two(ish) days to port the number over, but does that mean I won't have a working phone for two days?

You should keep using your Vodafone sim until the day your number transfers. When you've got your PAC, ring Orange and give it to them, and they should let you know what day your service will be transferred to them. You might be without service for a few hours on the day of the transfer, no more than that. Orange may give you a temporary number to use until you get your number transferred over as well.

my mum has been with vodafone on the same contract for 3 years. she wants to leave to go else where but when she phoned up vodafone they said she'd have to write to them and wait 30 days.

her contract expired long ago, does anybody have idea if this is legal or not?

She has to give 30 days notice, its part of the contract she agreed to I'm afraid.

If she wants to cancel 30 days notice but she says she wants a pac code and wants to take her number to another network there is no need for a letter. So to avoid the letter ask for a pac and move to pay as you go/contract on another network

Does anyone know if requesting my PAC is actually notification by me of terminating my contract?

i.e. if I receive my PAC and don't do anything with it, will my contract with my current mobile provider carry on as normal?

The answer is yes. The contract termination notice period is taken to commence on the date of issue of the PAC. But it is only relevant if the PAC is actually used.
