Hi
Im hoping (and praying) that I will be able to get to a Bootsale in a couple of weeks (OH can push me in the wheelchair of course..lol). Anyway, I need to get some winter clothes as my weight has dropped and now in a size 10/12  Trying to put weight on at the minute but Im still loosing.
We dont have alot of money, so what would you recomend me too look for. I am going to start a list and write everything down that I need as well as OH & DD. I literally have no winter clothes apart from a coat i bought on ebay last week and sister donated some clothes a few weeks back but even the size 12 jeans are hanging on me-especially around my legs-i look awful lol. I also feel the cold alot. I do have some smart shirts but hardly warm.
So what would you say is essential? I do live in PJ's most of the time because there so comfy but even these are falling down etc :eek:Can you get PJ's from bootsales? If you had no winter clothes...what would be on your list to buy?

I live in my fleecy jammies and tracksuits in winter sure you can get these at bootsales. I also wear a big fleecy dressing gown-4 sizes too big so i can snuggle. Thick socks knee length if possible and jumpers any jumper if i'm in the house I usually wear huge mens jumpers as these are easy to find at bootsales if you arent worried about what you look like.
I've just realised that I must look like a total bag lady all winter!!! in my huge tracksuitsa and jumpers. But I am cosy so I dont care sometimes even wear a hat inside for extra heat.
When I'm going outside in public(lol) i wear a long sleeved top(2 if its very cold) and a zip up cardigan(got heaps of these) or i bought an ankle length chunky cardigan from primark last winter which is so cosy.
All this should be available at bootsales my essentials though are my dressing gown cos i can throw it over anything and my knee length thick socks cos my feet get cold really easy.
Oh my other essential is my double bed sized fake fur throw so warm to sit wrapped in.0 -
Hi,
The ideal way is lots of thin layers you can take on and off, also helps in the winter with washing/drying clothes, as thin things dry quicker.
We've been to Finland a lot in the last two years, aswell as Arctic Norway!! So we're used to very low temperatures and wind chill, but being MSE'ers had to get the cheapest clothing solution we could. With you not being able to move legs so much to keep warm in a wheelchair and also feeling the cold due to weight loss I'd recommend buying some thermals, they may not sound glamorous, but they work!! When it's really cold we use thin waterproof outers on top of the jeans/trousers. If you can't find stuff at carboots do try Millets sales when they're on.
For jackets we use waterproof/thin/windproof jackets with detachable fleeces. So in the summer we use the jackets and fleeces seperately, but in the winter combine. Then have thermals and one/two layers under!! So make sure you have room to fit in the layers.
Other heat loss areas are hands/feet, so for feet two layers of socks, and some good insulated gloves, which don't leave a gap at the wrist to the jackets. Then add on hats & scarves when necessary.
I know it's not Finnish temperatures you're talking about, but it's the same principles everywhere.
Hope this gives some ideas.0 -
If you have no joy at boot sales, try the likes of Primark and Ethel Austin. You can normally pick up jogging bottoms around £3-4 a pair. They're great for wearing round the house as they're dead comfy. Both sell PJ's too but I'm not sure of prices.
Try wearing woolly tights under trousers when you go out. It's surprising how warm they keep your legs. My son plays football and I wear tights under trousers when I'm spectating as the football field is near the coast and the North Sea wind is icy cold!
I also agree with layers. I sometimes wear a thin jumper with a chunky jumper over the top for warmth.
Silky camisole tops are surprisingly warm and pretty. Something to put on your list to Santa perhapsHere I go again on my own....0 -
Jumpers and jogging bottoms are my winter must haves. Fleeses are good. I don't really go for winter PJs that much, I tend to get the summer ones, and just pile loads of blankets on the bed at night when it's cold.Comping, Clicking & Saving for Change0

Primark pyjamas are £5 and they have some lovely ones to choose from.
If you are near an aldi, netto or lidl - they sometimes do pyjamas and clothes - check the website. Around £5 and I think they are about to get more clothes in stock.

Its a lovely sunny day here, our local holiday as well so off to do some serious shopping with daughter.
Heading for Primark for the pjs and dressing gown then Peacocks for the fashionable must haves for this winter along with some new school blouses.
Like most 14 year olds she doesn't care if its warm as long as its "in"0 -
Hey
Thanks for the replies so far
Layers seem to be the key then..lol. I am going to look for some thick jumpers, jeans/trousers and pj's. Maybe some polo-necks to put under jumpers.
Im sitting here ATM in pj's, scruffy cardy, thick socks mum bought me from america and my support gloves..lol. I look a right mess....hope no one pops in today  but I feel warm, which is the main thing.
I have some great black boots for winter so no shoes or anything neededNever worn tights under trousers before-but will try. If i have no luck with pj's-i will get OH to go to Primarks-we have one local to us-never thought of them..lol.
I looked at my earlier post and I sound like a right pauper with no clothesBasically, its more like I have lots of clothes but they are too big for me ATM and as Im hoping to put some weight on, dont want to get rid of them yet. Im just after the essentials whilst Im trying to put some weight on, without spending too much money
Thanks

Have you got an asda near you, they had some fleese v neck jumpers for £3,cream,pink and blue,i baught myself a couple and they wash well, easy and very quick to dry too. Also you could have a look in the childrens section in asda as they do some nice zip up fleese for £7 on the back to school section and could be used as a jacket in the warmer weather too, they childrens clothes go upto age 16 and im a size 12 and they fit me
.Asda also do jogging bottoms on ladies section for £3,only seen black though and i havnt baught these but i know they also go upto size 22 in them for larger ladies.
I would recommend fleese rather than sweatshirts because they dry so quickly and always wash well.0 -
As for layering - a blouse and then a thin knitted type jumper or cardigan followed by another blouse is very effective. It acts like a cellular blanket with warm air being trapped in the knitwear between two cotton layers. Then any old (or new) jumper on top

Socks! - very essential for keeping those tootsies warm, and you'd be surprised just how much the rest of you feels warmer with socks on!
Get the proper wool ones that hill-climbers use though as these keep your feet like toast. I got a pack of 5 on Ebay last year for around £5-£6 I think and they are fantastic! I've been wearing my socks for the last few days since the weather turned a bit nippy again, and they've kept me nice and warm
Edit: just remembered another essential item I wear in winter too - fingerless gloves!!!
You'd be surprised how cold your hands and fingers get when you're sat at the keyboard and not moving around much, and I find these brilliant for keeping me warm. I have bad circulation anyway, so my extremeties always feel the cold quicker, but as long as my hands and feet are warm then I feel fine "An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"
