Tax Credits fraud - would you report it?

First thing I would do is offer to do the neighbours lawn free! Stop them ripping off an OAP before even considering any other action I would take.
:T You took the words right off my keyboard!
That is exactly what I would do, or, if I couldn't for some reason, I'd be finding them a cheaper alternative asap!!!
No way could I stand by and do nothing while someone is being blatantly ripped off!0 -
Thanks everyone.
I do know they are claiming money they are not entitled to. I know she enters her income as nil, and she is clearly earning a regular weekly income. Indeed the wages from one of her jobs is paid directly into her bank account so there's a clear trail there. Her income for last year was also entered as nil so the tax credits are being calculated on the basis she is not earning, but she is.
The mowing of the lawn has only started recently, and I think the pensioner is relatively ok with the situation, but that's not the point. If it were our neighbour my hubby would do it for nowt. It's hardly a large garden anyway. The poor pensioner can hardly walk and gets by with a frame, so its not like he has loads of money and just can't be bothered to cut it himself!
I know I have to report it, but I don't know whether I can live with the guilt. If I thought they would seriously suffer and the children wouldn't be fed because of it or whatever then I wouldn't do it. However they do seem to have lots of luxuries that are being paid for with dishonestly obtained money.
Don't get me wrong, I know all too well that things are not always as they seem on the surface, and they may have debts I don't know about, but at the end of the day what they are doing is wrong isn't it?
Thanks everyone for your comments. xx0 -
Shop her.
There are loads of low paid people not claiming anything because that'd be illegal. Why should law-abiding poor people go without while this cheeky fraudster thinks it's OK.
The law has to be seen to be upheld as a warning to others as well as the thief doing the claiming.0 -
I would have no hesitatation in reporting this situation.fascinated wrote: »Hi all,
Just wondering what to do about a fradulent tax credits claim that has been brought to my attention. TBH I have known for some time, but as the person making the claim is a very good friend of mine I just don't know what to do. She is claiming TC as though she is not workiing and just on her DH wages, which are low. However she has two cleaning jobs and takes in ironing on a regular weekly basis. I know she is earning at least £65.00 pw and not declaring it. I know she wouldn't have to pay income tax, but surely this would make a difference to her TC entitlement.
Just don't know. The thing that has really got to me now is that her DH has started cutting the grass of their elderly neighbour and charging him an extortionate amount of money for it. Basically they are paying their Council Tax each month through the money he earns, so that's £120.00 pm for mowing the lawn! And the neighbour is a pensioner. This just has to be wrong doesn't it?
I know it would make me a very bad friend for reporting it, but at the same time this makes a mockery of the system for those of us that pay our taxes, and our debts, and declare our earnings.
What would you all do?
I'll be interested to find out.

PS Apologies if this has been posted in the wrong place!
I have reported 2 people in the past whom I worked with, for ripping off the system.
1 had to repay money, and in the other case I dont know what happened.
I still feel tempted to report the 2nd person again as she has not stopped doing it.:heartpulsOnce a Flylady, always a Flylady:heartpuls0 -

The children won't starve - they have two incomes!! They will just have to learn to manage like everyone else does - tough though that may be for them after having it so good this long!
I'd have thought it is them who should be living with the guilt!

I think everybody is jumping to a conclusion that there is fraud here, could it not be that their tax credits are based on their previous years earnings?
Who cares, report it and let the authorities sort it out. People in genuine hardship need the help tax credits bring. These people are robbing a vulnerable neighbour!I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another, so please feel free to ignore this.0 -
i have just this minute reported my workmate again.
Hope they do something about it this time:heartpulsOnce a Flylady, always a Flylady:heartpuls0 -
I'd report them, why should they get more than they are entitled to ?fascinated wrote: »Hi all,

Report them. TCO compliance will look into it and decide if fraud is being committed.
I know it's difficult when it's a friend who is involved but too much taxpayers money is being lost each year because of people who think they have the right to steal. Besides which these people you are talking about obviously think nothing about exploiting a pensioner for their own gain too.
Actually someone I use to work with reported her neighbour on this number and nothing was done about it. 6 months later she did actually report again, she was livid that in her eyes nothing was done about it.
Surely this isn't right??:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling0
