Cutting out the early morning sun with blinds..

We are currently decorating our bedroom and will be replacing the thick curtains we have hanging there.. I would like to replace them with the wooden venetian blinds but am not sure how well they would block out the early morning sun. The room is East facing and at present as soon as the sun rises (5am at the moment) its shines directly in the windows.. I am a light sleeper and it still sometimes wakes me even with the thicker curtains. So does anyone have these blinds in a bedroom and do they cut out the sunlight or am I just gonna have to buy new thick curtains.. I'd certainly prefer not..

A relative said that if the sun shines directly through her blinds the sun shines through the gaps.. I just wonder if maybe she hadn't closed them fully...

I'm doubtful wooden venetians will cut out the light. We have aluminium venetians in the kitchen and they still let some light through the gaps when shut - enough to not need to put the light on in the morning. I'd go for a blackout blind and maybe conceal it behind a pelmet so it looks nicer.

Thanks for that its as I thought then... damn and blast... can't really see me going for a pelmet so I may have to rethink this .... I had this vision of wooden blinds and sheer voile draped artistically hahhahahha but If I am woken at 5am every day its a no no... hopefully someone will have some other ideas for me...

We have dark wooden blinds (courtesy of Ikea), they're not too bad, however the light will still seep through the gaps. I also have curtains hanging which I have lined for maximum sun block :D

Vertical blinds are great our south facing living gets sun to mid afternoon so shines on tv sometime around dinner time ish. We can use blinds to cut the suns rays if we want too

Thanks guys , we have vertical blinds at the back of the house and they work fine but my bedroom window is a bit weird , in that we don't have any window sill or recess for the vertical blind to sit in... hard to explain but we would have to hang it from the wooden window frame itself and there wouldn't be enough space for them to turn as they would be hanging virtually against the glass when flat...

We have blackout roller blinds, bought from John Lewis. Excellent, not a sign of daylight. If you have gaps, more so at side, then put lined curtain either side..

Thanks Lexie we have lined curtains at the moment and I was hoping to not replace them, the windows looks so much bigger and better without them...

  • We just had wooden shutters fitted and I am in Heaven, I can now sleep in a dark room. I had wooden blinds before and the light came through the gaps, I hated it. My bedroom is south-facing.

We have vertical blinds in the bedroom, however I also have a blackout roller blind, we have a recessed window and the roller is attached with the brackets facing upwards so that it is attached to the top of the window not to the wall (if you know what I mean) in summer I just pull the roller down to filter out the light

We have a similar prob i have to say! My long love of having venetians and they look so nice and neat but they do let light in (i have to get up for work at 5am so doesn't affect me lol) we have light oak ones too so don't think that helps really!
Ther is a shop near us that makes them and they can actually do black out backs to them so they guarantee practically no light but tbh the price almost knocked me of my stool lol..maybe when i have loads spare cash!
anyway waffling now i would still reccomend them but just make sure they are cut well..we have lots of dark days in this country really don't we!
