Managed to get one today after a bit of hunting. Friend of mine bought the non-rechargable one for a little more than this recently. Thanks to the OP.0

Looking at this one I'm pretty sure you could use it with either rechargable ones or standard 'D's. The battery supplied looks like four wrapped in plasitc. I can't say I've tried it yet, so don't hold me to that.
Not much point to buy the rechargable one for this purpose, also remembering not to plug it in for charging with regular batteries inserted!0 -

Agree with comments regarding quality. Have used standard Maglites for over ten years, used regularly and they still look like new. They were standard issue for American police because of their robustness and focussing beam.
£30.00 may still seem expensive if you just want a torch to throw in a drawer for bonfire night... These are real workhorses, made out of aircraft grade machined aluminium, in all probability over engineered for the job.
Don't know what price B&Q originally were selling them for but last price was £70.00.
Cheers
I have 3 maglites - bought one others were present...a long time ago when i bought mine (15 years ago) they were by far the best torches on the market.....sure they are strong but as a torch they are rubbish compared to newer torches....they are v strong though....the ny police used them.....

It sometimes seems it's hard not to fall into the trap of knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing when you're a moneysaver. That is, if you see something discounted heavily you might think that it's automatically good value but it could just have been way overpriced in the first place. Maglites are well-made torches (and I'm sure they were supplied to American police at huge discounts because of the marketing potential) but that doesn't mean they are worth the insane full prices charged.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

I have had one of these for 11 years, was given it as a thank you present in the states, and as some one who use them a lot, scouts and in search and rescue, i think they are brillient. only broken a couple of bulbs and had to replace the battery last year. but i would deff reccommend them, and i think much better than the 4d or any normal maglite.
the batteries are not interchangable with normal d cell, as the charging point is on the handle, so the battery is slightly shorter than 3 d size ones if you see what i mean.

I got the last two from B&Q East Kilbride. If anyone local to me wants one, then please PM me otherwise one of them is ebay fodder.

Maglite's are guaranteed for life (which in reality is 25 years). I used to work in an outdoor retailer, and people would bring them back after 15 years and say its not working, and Mag would send a new one as a replacement. No quibbles, excellent company.
Think about it buy crappy plastic torch for £5, lasts a year (I doubt it but for arguments sake). In 25 years thats £125, the price of this torch new!! No argument, plus with Mags you can throw them around drive cars over them drop them in a puddle and they still work. Even if its occasional use, its worth the money. At £30 odd dont even think about going to Argos!
I though this is suppsoed to be money saving, in which case think about how long things last and the cost per unit time in comparison with cheaper/poorer models. Its similar to the cost per wear clothes thing...!!!!Littlewoods catalogue - won back charges of £300 by default.
