Check the network coverage on 3 Italy's website to see if it's ok in the areas you'll be, as 3 Like Home means no roaming cost.

If so, get a 3 UK payg SIM and add on a monthly package of as many calls as you think you'll need, e.g. 300 minutes for £15, 700 minutes for £21.

On other Italian networks, 3 UK roams at 10 pence a minute incoming, 25 pence a minute outgoing. Or there are Vodafone Passport or O2's My Europe Extra worth looking at.

Or you might look into global SIM cards - see the mobile roaming thread at the top of the borad, and Martin's article referred to in the first post

Or for an Italian SIM card, perhaps Wind, maybe with their own Dialoga International calling card - 10c/min to UK landlines, but 62.5c for UK mobiles, or maybe with another callthrough, such as DialNow

It only costs 12p per minute to UK landlines or mobiles without buying a package, roaming on 3 Italy. This will require a 3G capable handset tho.

If you use the 3 UK sim in a 2G handset it will only roam onto one of the other networks - this will be 25p per minute as redux says.

3 are doing a prepay sim for £9.95 with £10 credit, plus will give you an additional £10 if you port in your existing number. If you use use Quidco, they will give you £4 back.

I hope you're only getting a SIM, as you'd have to be making a lot of calls to save back the cost of a new phone as well. Try eBay for a secondhand one

    Hi ADM,

As edux has said Vodafone have a service called Passport which is a great product and could save you some money when making calls from Italy back to the UK.

Each time you make a call from most European destinations, whether it's back to the UK or within the country you're in, you simply pay a standard connection charge of 75p per call then the rest of your call is charged at the standard UK rate.

I can confirm that Italy is a country covered by Passport but for more information regarding this service and to find out which other countries are covered please visit the Vodafone Passport section of the website.

    Hope this helps,

more Vodafone flirting close to spam

Yes, I mentioned the product already, and people are quite able to find their own way to the website

But what's more, in response to a question about the cheapest way to call from Italy, I suggested a couple of other choices were better - 3's 500 minutes for £15 is unmatchable by Vodafone which would have added a lot of 75 pence charges, plus up to 30 pence a minute if pay as you talk. Wind's 10 cents a minute to UK is great for more modest use and they also have good rates or interesting monthly add-on packages for local calls
