Constant sneezing..

Every morning i wake up , i seem to sneeze constantly and have a runny nose. Obviously, this happens in the summer ( hay fever etc.) but it is still happening now.

By about 10am it all disappears and i'm fine during the day(i.e it is not a cold).
I have been taking lots of vitamin c, garlic tablets - all sorts of things but nothing seems to work.

Would could be causing it?
Anyone else experience this?
Thanks in advance

  • Im not trying to sound cheeky, but is your bed/ bedroom dusty? Could be a dustmite allergy?

Thanks, it is not cheeky at all.
Because i am asthmatic, we dust the place fairly regularly - so i don't think it can be that.
However, we do plan to give the bedroom a major clean at the weekend anyway so i can test the theory again.

Again, not wanting to sound cheeky but could it be your curtains? They can collect a heck of lot of dust and if you're opening them in the morning and dispersing the dust it could cause some of your symptoms. :-/

    Thanks

I plan to get the curtains dry cleaned as soon as i can. I have to admit they haven't been done recently and they hang above the radiator which may promote dust mites.
    Any other ideas?

Have you got any pets? I had a similar problem when pregnant with youngest, couldn't get to sleep cos all bunged up so did major clean-up and found cat had been going under bed and there was cat hair on floor.

    Problem resolved.

Try vacuuming ya matress and pillows to remove allergens and follow with a steam cleaner to kill any nasties that my be lurking. It certainly sounds as if the prob relates to ya bedroom/bed if the symptoms wear off by mid-morning.

The steam cleaner seems a good idea. I have never used one. Where can i get one from and are they expensive?

There's a link here with some info on (there's a Which report but I think you have to sign up for a free trial of the magazine :-/) but I would be tempted to check out local hire shops. I've a feeling that you would need a dry steam cleaner as you don't want your mattress to become all soggy.

I've never done it myself but maybe someone who has can advise you how's best to do it.

  • You could always get some mattress covers, quilt covers and pillow covers?

I like the idea of a 'box mattress cover' - which completely envelopes the mattress.

All of your bedding should be washed at 60 degrees Celsius once a week to kill dustmites. When we got a new bed, we got an anti dustmite latex mattress so I didn't have to worry about getting a cover.

One of those little hand held steamers can be a godsend though- but take ages doing a mattress. If you do it first thing in the morning, and leave it all day it should be fine to sleep on that night.

Hope you get to the root cause of your allergy soon.

  • Also, it may be worth considering getting roller blinds for your bedroom, or curtains that can be washed at 60c?

Is your carpet newish or not? Friends of ours were horrified when they had they house recarpeted recently. The backing of the old one had worn away to dust, which was causing problems for one of their children with breathing problems.

Oh, Febreze do a new product for reducing allergens on fabric too - check your local large supermarket.
