everything has died!
Hi,
i am very new to grwin my own veg etc, but got myself a small plastic type greenhouse with 3 shelves, and some seed trays. i planted a load of seeds, put the lids on and put them in the greenhouse. i watered them every night.
the brocolli, lettuce and spinach all came up. then the next day, everything but the brocolli had turned brown and slimy and died??
Did i over water them? did they get too warm??
Also, none of the other seeds have even started to grow?
thanks for your help

sounds like too moist, only water when you poke a finger down a quarter of an inch down and it isn't wet - then water...
remedy by keeping outside or under glass (sunny window sill) instead until better....
: )What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots0 -
I saw your comment and just had to reply because I have 'black fingers' wverything I try to grow dies! I've just learnt to carry on and not touch anything in the garden!

Sounds like you over watered. The green mold inst such a issue too much, I get that myself. But I rarely water every day
Oh well gardening is trial and error0 -
Fairly certain it's due to overwatering. When you sow the seeds, water them in and cover the trays, they shouldn't need watering again until they start growing. Some off the seed has probably died off as soon as it's germinated, the stronger ones have grown but been killed off by fungus.
Have another go and you'll be successful. Because the soil in the trays has been so wet, it would be best to start with fresh compost.0 -
Far too wet; those you mentioned only need to be damp; and the seeds have probably rotted away, or are still waiting to grow on. I only water when the top is dry.
I'd resow the ones that have died. Can't say how long to leave the rest as you haven't said what they are or when they were sown but it is common practice to sow 'little and often' - so for lettuce and salads that's about 20 [or a good pinch] every fortnight; and it will keep you in salads over a longer period.0 -
Over watering = Rot or worse Damping off disease.
When planting seeds water very sparingly and ideally from below, failing that use a spray gun rather than a watering can. A spray gun is excellent with seedlings as you can direct the water to the base of the seedling avoiding soaking any new leaves.0 -
the ones that haven't even started to grow are a variety of herbs and tomatoes and cucumbers.
I think that i;ll keep the brocolli as it seems to be growing ok, and i'll start throw out and start again with everything else.
i'll be more careful with the watering this time!
do the seed trays need both the plastic lid and the greenhouse, or is the green house on its own enough?
thank you so muc for all of your help. i feel so bad that i killed them!!0 -
The cucumber seeds could have been expensive so gently poke through the compost and find them. If they don't have any rot on them, carefully replant them.0

If you are using the same the same seed trays, wash them first in hot soapy water and rinse well in case of any bacteria remaining! :-)0

I'm so pleased that this thread has appeared! I planted loads of seeds at the weekend and put them out in propagator trays. I watered them and I've been checking them daily since but I've not watered them yet as they all looked moist enough.
I did water my courgette and pepper seeds yesterday because I planted them in single cell trays and didn't have lids for them so I rigged up a cloche type thing from carrier bags. It was lovely and hot yesterday so I took off the bags and let them soak up the sun. Consequently they needed watering last night. Then I put back the bags.
