seamstress has runined my trousers.. what to do?

Options
Bought a really nice pair of linen trousers from Next. They were for a wedding this coming Staurday.

They were slightly long, so took them to a shop to get taken up. When I have got them home, one leg is clearly shorter than the other, the hem isn't straight, she has machine stitched them instead of hand sewn (which is what they were originally).

I'm so upset and don't know what to do. Please help :embarasse

  • take them back and ask her to fix them. Did you check them/try them on before you accepted them back from her?

No, as I didn't have the shoes with me that I will be wearing.

They can't be fixed. altering them anymore will result in different width hems + they don't hang properly now either.
  • If it was me I'd take the receipt from next and ask her to refund what you paid for them plus the alteration cost.

Not sure if she has to refund legally though, but I wouldn't be leaving till I was happy.

Then buy a new pair and hem them yourself.

I am sure that a proper seamstress will still be able to sort them.

(I doubt that they were originally truly hand stitched - you bought them from Next, not Harvey Nichols!).
    Gone ... or have I?

They are linen and were hand stitched. She is a proper seamstress. It is a shop dedicated to alterations.

If the wedding is this Saturday coming, even if you enter into any dispute with the seamstress, it would be unlikely to be settled so quickly unless she agrees about the bad work and puts it right straight away.

Otherwise................For the moment, buy another pair, and get them adjusted elsewhere. This will at least sort you out for Saturday.

Clearly she is not a proper streamstress or she would not have messed it up!

Sadly anybody can claim to be a seamstress, it does not require specific qualifications or membership of a regulatory body.

She altered my partner's trousers and his are fine. So, she can do the job, she has just spoilt mine unfortunatly.

Although you would normally expect this. We do have to allow for the fact that we do/can make mistakes every now and then (I'm very good at my trade after just under 30 years, but I still find my brain goes walkabout on a rare occasion while I need him on my side). A good tradesperson will understand a mistake, and would want to sort it out ASAP (normally I spot them before the customer sees...........this is what experience does for you)
