That is actualy a damned good point ... the operator would only know what was on their screen and they will generally accept that it is correct - all they will see is a cheque comnig out and another one going in a few days later.

I don't think ING did say that at all. I think they said "yes, a cheque for £10k has been paid into your account".

Which in itself was obviously proof the money was in the wrong place - it would have shown as an intra-account transfer if it had been returned by the aunt, not as a cheque deposit.

The whole story doesn't stack up.

You have no idea whether the aunt would have done an inhouse transfer or paid by cheque.

You have to remember we are talking of a call centre here - they do not necessarily have access to the detailed screens that a highly skilled backroom operator may have access to. Many call centres will see little more than what an 'online' user can see - but they will have access to various comments and narratives on the account (e.g. that someone had called, what they asked, the answer, what sort of attitude they had etc.) ... just as an aside some of the comments against peoples accounts can be hilarious I have personally seen things like 'grumpy old fart', 'thinks they can walk on water', 'thick as two short planks', 'total bimbo' etc. I always wondered what would happen if a company had to supply a copy of data held under data protection act or freedom of information act ????? :D
