Setting up Virgin Wireless without CD

I recently gave a Netgear DG834G to a relative so they could use it with their virgin broadband.
But we used the Netgear for use with AOL, and therefor have the setup CD for AOL and not Virgin.

They were willing to buy one from Virgin to save the hassle but have had problems with the customer services (the relative whos name the contract is in recently had a stroke and therefor cant speak to them, and they refuse to speak to anyone else!!:mad: )

Anyway is there anyway of installing virgin Wireless without the Setup CD provided by then.
I tried downloading the Netgear firmware but i had to be connected to the internet to do so, and therefor couldnt have the current modem and the new Netgear router plugged in to the phone socket @ the same time. So that didnt really work

Does your relative have Virgin ADSL or Virgin cable?

No set-up CD is required, just connect the router to the PC via Ethernet and enter 192.168.0.1 into your browser.

If your relative gets Virgin via cable, you really need a WGR614 router not a DG834G

Might be 192.169.1.1 as well for the default router address, my netgear certainly connects to the admin part via that

Your Netgear what? The default IP for a DG 834G is 192.168.0.1 but it can be changed.

Sorry whats the difference:o. The modem they have plugs into an ADSL filter into the phoneline so is that Virgin ADSL?
I tried to search what the difference was but didnt get very far:rolleyes:.

Also do you need to be connected to the internet to access the Router setup page the 192..etc one.

If it uses the BT phone line, it is adsl, and you have the correct type of router, and you don't need to be connected to the net to get there. It will resolve the above address to 192.168.0.1 probably, maybe 1.1, which are local addresses, not on the net.

Ok Great.
One final question.
The current Virgin modem they have atm to connect them to the internet. Do i need to leave this in or take it out when connecting the new router?

take it out and plug the adsl cable (from the filter) into the RJ45 socket on the back of the router.

I would guess that they will have done that by now as it was 18 months ago!
