(and can i also add that the well intentioned posts saying it's all our fault for our diet don't help at all - some people, like me, got spots from junior school age despite very good diets. and the earlier you get acne, the longer it lasts - if only i'd grown out of it as a teenager! diet can make things worse, but i know mine is just genetic as i can see relatives on my father's side with similar problems despite living in completely different countries. i also didn't touch any diary products for the best part of a year (I think 9/10 months in total), and saw no improvement. when you've had people come up to you and ask you if you have measles, trust me, you try everything. some of us are just damn unlucky and being told it's just our own fault for what we eat can be really really upsetting)

Poor you, it really is a horrible condition, and I hope you sort it soon. However, to be fair to the poster above, everyone is different and for some diet is a factor.

Whilst I only had a bit of acne, as did OH who had a terrible diet as a kid and teen, our DD has had bad outbreaks since she was 9, and my heart bleeds for her. We've done the round of prescription stuff (won't use cos they dry her skin out, and itch, plus she has to be dragged to the Dr's), and lots more but the spots kept coming.

Over time, by trial and error, and lots of research on my part (including the articles above), we've discovered which foods trigger her acne, and adjusted our diet. We eat pretty healthily anyway, but have found that even the occasional fatty foods or chocolate/sweets can cause outbreaks, energy drinks like Dr Pepper create havoc. Milk has no effect either way.

She exercises loads, mostly keeps her skin clean, and is spot free if she stays off the junk. But she's also 13, and lazy and stubborn at times, so still gets acne cos she wants the junk more and can go and buy it--her choice, she's very bright and I'm only willing to control her so much.

Because I can tell whether she's eaten sweets/fizzy drinks by looking at her skin, I can say categorically that diet can, for some people, be major factor in acne, so the above articles about diet may help someone, and are not necessarily about blaming sufferers.
    Anytime;)

As I said in an earlier post - different things work for different people, and I too can vouch for the diet debate, as too much sugary stuff seemed to stoke up for a good bout of painful, under the skin boil-like acne for me. Another trigger for me and the biggest factor was good ole stress! As well as the 'sweat session' I mentioned earlier, also a nice drop of sun did wonders too...just a bit though! icon12.gif

oh i agree that diet can be a big factor, i'm not denying that (i even said that in my other post!). i can only tell you how frustrating it is when people suggest it repeatedly thinking that you've never even thought of it.... i cook everything myself from scratch and limit fatty foods (i can't even remember the last time i had junk food!). i've excluded every possible thing in my diet and it doesn't help - every month, boils appear on my face. i've had this for 20 years and for a lot of people with bad skin, well intentioned advice can actually just cause upset! i've ceased to read any of ted's posts in detail because of the vitamin D- NHS conspiracy rubbish, so that doesn't bother me at all. i just really wanted to emphasise how sensitive an issue this can be!

Hi melancholy, fair enough point. Sorry if I'm repeating stuff you've heard, but rather than excluding have you tried adding 'good foods', oily fish, good range of beans, legumes, sprouts etc, to see if any foods help? Again, not meaning to lecture, just really feel for you and you never know.

Do you dispute the fact that Cholecalciferol as a stand alone supplement is not available on the NHS to correct Vitamin D deficiency?

Do you dispute the fact that in most circumstances D3 Cholecalciferol is more effective than D2 Ergocalciferol in raising 25(OH)D status?

Do you dispute the fact that most UK adults have insufficient Vitamin D status?

Do you dispute the fact that NATURALLY in most people the body only stores Vitamin D3 when 25(OH)D levels exceed 100nmol/l?

Do you dispute the fact that the human body uses between 3000-5000iu daily and that to attain and maintain a level above 100nmol/l a person living in the UK will require at least 4000iu/daily/D3

You can call it what you like, I certainly don't remember using the word conspiracy but I cannot recall many instances of the medical profession ever admitting they were wrong and only when the NHS admits that current guidance is wrong will the situation improve.

If you want to dispute any of the information I put online then it is easy for you to provide links to your supporting evidence as I do.

If you can come up with a logical, rational, evidence based, reason for the current NHS position with regard to the unavailability of D3 on prescription then I await your reply, but I won't hold my breath.

i'm trying to be polite, but i've had this for nearly 20 years. i've been though creams and topical antibiotics, then tablet antibiotics and then the pill when all else failed. looking at your diet is pretty obvious and it really can be patronising to suggest this to people who have suffered from acne for years and years............ i know it's all meant well, really i do, but i've been through hell trying to get rid of this and have tried everything. i'm not trying to be rude, but i really want people to understand how frustrating it can be to suffer from this and then be told all the time things you should really try when you've been there and done that.

(and i had post infective IBS so my diet has to be very very healthy!! it was that that made me do food allergy tests and cut everything out.... i eat beans usually 3 nights a week and have oily fish and supplements etc etc. i get a weekly local veg bag delivered to ensure i get fresh organic veg every night............ some of us really just lost out in the genetics - thank god for makeup!)

i hope the sentiment of this post makes sense - i'm not having a go, just trying to explain why i hate being told it's all about my diet! :)

Hi melancholy, yeah, it makes sense and I appreciate you not being rude:o. I'll shuddup now;).

Sorry you've had such a rough time, you eat MUCH better than me, and I eat better than most people I know, even taking occasional junk food into account, sometimes things just don't make sense do they.

It must be incredibly frustrating for you, I really do hope there's an answer out there and you find it soon.

    Good luck, Jay

i'm just resigned to it now! even if the spots go away i'll have the scars... but with better make up, it's not so bad these days (even if heavy make up makes it worse - no easy win here!) :)

I've been seeing a naturopathic practitioner recently for an IBS-related illness with acne being one of the symptoms. As she has told me, it may not be what you eat, but waht you absorb from your food. I've had tests done to see if there has been any imbalance of gut bacteria and now am taking a food intolerance test also to see which foods can flare up my symptoms. It's pricey, but fingers crossed it will be worth it.
