I've just won an item on eBay, that I've been looking at/bidding on a couple for the last week or so.
I've just noticed that apparently I've won another one, even though I stopped bidding on it as it went to more than I wanted to pay. I can only think that someone has retracted their bid, making me the top bidder.
I only started bidding on another one as I wasn't the top bidder - so what do I do!? I don't really want to say 'oh, I don't want it anymore' cuz that seems a little unfair, but I don't want a NPB strike as that is equally unfair!

Unfair ?
It`s probably a bit of shill bidding gone wrong anyway0 -
Haha, when you put it like that!
I mean unfair that they might lose fees and whatever? I'm not really 100% how it works. I don't see that I should get an NPB for something I don't want that I was outbid on. If that makes sense?x

Ebay would say 'Don't bid until you are certain that you haven't won a duplicate item' ie. until the other auction has ended. Have you looked at the listing to find out why the top bid was cancelled? There may be a legit reason.
Your choices are:
1. Pay
2. Not pay and risk a NPB strike
3. Apologise profusely to the seller and ask them to do a mutual dispute. They might refuse.
Remember that you have incurred the seller fees - so be willing to make amends for your mistake if necessary. My TV is broken!

There is no way out of this unless you can persuade one of the sellers to do mutual to reclaim their fees. However, many sellers will not agree to a mutual as it rquires a degree of co operation from the buyer and with the new rules about no negs etc there is very little incentive at all for a seller to believe anything a buyer says anymore as seller loses whatever happens.
However you can see why you ended up the highest bidder just by looking at the bidding history as that will show retracted bids.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Ah, will it say why they retracted their bid?
I'll go and have a mooch as soon as eBay decides to load. It's just bloody annoying cuz it's not really my mistake, grrr! x0 -

Bids on ebay are binding... even if you were briefly out-bid. It's your mistake, although it probably doesn't feel like it!

Check for retracted bids and do some research to see if it is a shill bidder or not then decide how nice you are going to be.0

There's just me and bidder 2, bidder 2 retracted two bids within two minutes of the other as they'd "entered wrong bid amount" hmmm..0

Report to ebay (after speaking with the seller to say you dont want it and presuming they dont like that thought)
Bidder 2 is supposed to enter the `correct` amount :rolleyes:0 -
You could try reporting it, but I believe only the seller can report an invalid bid retraction. At least... last time I tried, I got a standard email from ebay telling me they weren't interested. My TV is broken!
