SMS settings should kind of just work without an update.
MMS will require the correct WAP settings. If your phone is supported, try http://getsettings.o2.co.uk/ServeSettingsWebApp/
If not, details are available on various places on the web such as - http://www.filesaveas.com/o2wap.html
When setting up my phone, I found this walk through on CPW to be useful.
