Why would you change sterling into dollars when the currency is Egyptian Pounds?

Got myself a bit confused reading some websites as people were posting prices in dollars and egpytian pounds. All cleared up now thought thanks.

Because they happily accept US Dollars and Sterling.

When I've been almost all restaurants/shops have prices in all 3 currency's.

Yes, I have been to Egypt but I would never dream of changing sterling to dollars to pay for something that has been converted locally from Egyptian pounds to dollars and therefore possibly at a disadvantageous exchange rate.

They will accept other currencies - but at extortionate rates!

I'm half Egyptian & have lived there - only the touristy places will accept dollars & pounds, euros etc.. If you are going somewhere away from the touristy spots there's no way that they will accept any other currencies!

A tip I was given to get round 'baksheesh' was to buy about $20 in $1 bills and I gave them out as tips during our holiday last year - worked well.

Alternatively you could just tip in Egyptian pounds which are of far more use to the locals ;)

Visa at the airport = 15 UK Pounds or $15 or 150 Egyptian (Sharm el Sheikh anyway).

Get Egyptian and also US dollars.

    Casinos only take US dollars.

Don't get ripped off by the taxi's!

Also, I saw Egyptians changing their Egyptian pounds into US dollars at the cash machines, maybe they don't like their own currency?
