granit worktops

Options
Anybody got any ideas on what detergent to use on a polished granite kitchen worktop. Every spray I get leaves a white murky film on the granite and it wont shine - ive tried mr. muscle, domestos spray etc. I want to be killing germs as its the kitchen but don't know why it stains so bad
Any ideas

  • White vinegar and tea-tree oil?

That's what I use for cleaning the kitchen and bathroom although mine are white, but I wouldn't have thought it would leave any residue :)

I use extremely hot water and a microfibre cloth and we wipe up any mess as soon as it happens...never used any cleaners on mine, in almost 2 years it is still shiney. I know lemon juice can damage granite so I would be careful with anything acidic...

Here's some info on care of granite worksurfaces.............

I don't think you're supposed to use anything acidic such as vinegar or lemon juice on granite because it can etch the surface. A thorough rinse should remove any residue of cleaning agent.

    Doesn't washing up liquid work?

Ive got blach high gloss worktops and are a right bug*er to clean.

The best methods we have found is either very hot soapy water buffed up with a tea-towel or vinegar buffed with tea-towel. Also use this on the black tiles too.

I went off and checked about vinegar and granite just in case I'd got myself all confused with marble.

The gist of things are - no acids. Washing up liquid should work.

Agree with nearlyrich - a microfibre cloth, just with water, is plain wonderful! I use e-cloths , they are expensive on the face of it but they are marvellous and last and last, worth their money in gold!. And you can use them on other surfaces, not just your wroktops.

You might be able to get them cheaper on eBay.

Unfortunately i have found it to be not that good, it tends to just leave a shiney "film" on top of the granite and it's not really intended for cleaning i don't think, more for just a polish.
Going slightly off-topic... (and sorry for resurrecting an old thread)
I've been having "discussions" lately with my blokey about the cleaning of our kitchen. We have granite worktops and a tiled floor and i just use very hot water (with a drop or two of washing up liquid if it's really mucky) and a microfibre cloth on the worktop and a microfibre mop and very diluted floor cleaner on the floor and i think this is sufficient. My bloke says it's dirty and how can a flannel and water clean and kill germs?
Can anyone give me any advice about this, is what i do sufficient or should i be using bleach or something else to clean with? I know i can't use vinegar or any cleaner with lemon/orange juice in as it's acidic and would ruin the granite, what about other "brand" cleaners? Should i be using mr muscle or cif or something?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me :)
    Fran x
