I also have a tortoise. My mates can't understand how I can be attached to something apparently so ugly, not cuddly and boring! Well, he has been in my family for over 70 years and would not get rid of him for the world. Yes, he destroys the vegetable patch; he's like a bulldozer, doesn't necessarily want to eat the veg, but just destroy it! He has a personality and if I am in the garden and he hears my voice, he does come out of hiding. He is actually quite sweet and I would never give him up!

I have three cats and whatever stray ones I can feed. My first cat my partners mum chucked out on the street  because she stated that she could not afford the cat food ?? ( despite the cat keeping her house free of mice for years! and her big fat private pension ). My second cat was a neighbours who kept it locked out most of the day and night when young. My third one we found abandoned at 9 weeks old sheltering under the belly of cars from the raging storm! I despise people who abandon or ill treat their animals! People should THINK before they get an animal, if they value goods, luxury living, a certain lifestyle then thats fine, but dont ruin an animals life!!!!
Funny though all the cats we have are black and white, my friends get confused! :rotfl:

i completely agree with you. Im beginning to think my friend is a waste of space and out for what she can get to be honest. Granted lots of people are feeling the pinch but she is one of those people who thinks of herself and her material things first and not what others around her need (her son hasnt been to school in over a week because the weathers bad being a prime example). Also the dog she has Ive seen her walk - um...............once and that was because i invited her out with him. I am glad though that mine and her dog seem to get on well so if worst comes to worst and she decides to get rid of him I might see if I can sweet talk the boyfriend into taking him in because he is a lovely dog (hes 7 but seems older) who jsut seems to want a peaceful life and a cuddle every now and then. i dont think shes bothered or taken the time to bond with him at all.

We have had a rough few years in our house, lots of ill health etc and basically christmas' have been torturous for us basically. On top of everything else, lack of money, no food, etc our dog gets very ill when cold weather sets in (think it is a psychological issue from his previous owners - am sure he must of been locked out in the cold weather or something but he has a bad memory of it) and he goes form a healthy happy dog to a shivering, painfully thin wreck in a matter of days, will barely move and is severely depressed.

We did everything we could even though we were skint, we made him a new bed from an old duvet we had under the bed, he was snuggled under a radiator to keep him warm, was fed warm milk, chicken and rice and we even got him a jumper to help him keep his body heat in. We had to have our christmas dinner donated year before last and we basically had £5 to our names after the few gifts we could afford our son we were so skint but he was our poorly baby so we did everything in our power to get him better and fingers crossed we'll be better off this year but we will still be making the preperations for his 'turn' in about september/october.
    Time to find me again
  • Human beings have a lot to answer for. I have a rescue Border Collie who I could'nt even stroke when I first got him because he had been abused. Today I had to take him to the vet - I was bricking it because he has a fear-aggressive reaction to strangers due to his abused past. But.... I was gobsmacked, he was good as gold, didn't shout at anyone & even let the vet do a skin scrape!!! All I've done really is give him a proper home to live in. Shows what a difference that makes, doesn't it? Anyway, to the point of this thread.... I feed my two collies complete dry food (Autarky) that costs about £18 for 15kg and lasts over a month. Three meals a day, that's roughly 50p per day FOR TWO DOGS. How can anyone say they can't afford that??

People are probably using the 'credit crunch' as just an excuse to get rid of their pets.

I could never get rid of my two Shih Tzu's. They are family to me.

People are getting more lazy as well or more focus is being put on work with more time being spent at the office than ever before as employers demand more (that's another topic methinks), and as such, people think or cannot be bothered to make time for the animals.

Shih Tzu's are a lot of work and time and I have seen more Shih Tzu's that need rehoming than ever before.
  • It saddens me to think people are that irresponsible and THEY GET AWAY WITH IT! We have two cats, a guinea pig and fish. The cats are both from the Cats Protection rescue centre and the guinea pig is my fiance's family and they're moving so he volunteered. My friend's cat has just died and it hit me just how upset I would be if something happened to my 'babies' and we both agreed how horrible it would be. When we took them I had a grilling about the sort of situation I was in with my fiance (he wasn't my fiance at that point) to ensure we were responsible and I ended up saying what I said to my OH, 'even if we split up, one of us will continue to look after the animal' and we've always said that. I would have to be absolutely desperate to give up my pets. And to think that people 'dump' them when they go on holiday is horrible, especially when there are other people that are distraught at losing pets.

Anyway, I feel better for ranting! :)
