Pets suffering in credit crunch

I heard on the news yesterday, that animal rescue centres are having a surge of pets being brought in, some having been left out on the streets, due to people finding it hard to cope with the rising cost of living. Yes, they are expensive, but I would rather cut back on the food I buy for myself, than get rid of my dog. I'm sure most people on here would too.

That's really sad to hear. My pets are for life, come what may. They didn't have a choice about me taking them on so it's my job to give them a secure and happy home.Self employed and loving it

Sadly some people use any excuse to get rid of them. All they need to do is cut back a bit on say cigarettes or other crap stuff they may buy. A dog doesn't cost that much, the poor dogs who come into rescues, it's not fair.0

that's such a sad story - my dog relies on me for his food and if it came to the stage of buying his food or mine I would chose his - I'm sure it would taste okay with a bit of gravy mixed in - it would probably be more nutritious than the stuff I make for myself!0

EEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW....................................................:p
I hate the idea that people get rid of their pets for any and every reason.
A friend of mine who quite frankly shouldnt be allowed animals - keeps getting dogs given to her (ok one she adopted) then she barely spent any time with it,no training and it wrecked her house so she took it back. Now someone has given her a dog and she ignores it and is now sayign she cant afford to feed him becuase everythgin else is so expensive.
Granted we are struggling with the price rises but we still make sure our dog/pets (2 terrapinsa dn fish) are fed. They are family and our dog is liek a second baby to us so of course he is taken care of.Time to find me again0 -
Even if I had no money Id still buy food / supplies for my baby (Ollie my parrot). I couldnt dream of him not being happy, and the thought of giving him up doesnt even compute!Green and White Barmy Army!0

I think if people are genuinely so hard up they cannot afford to keep a pet or if they get evicted from their home then it is very very sad and at least they are taking their pet to an animal shelter rather than just dumping it somewhere.
However I do think a lot of the people are not as hard up as that. There is almost always something you can cut back on.
I could no more imagine getting rid of my dog and cats than cutting off my arm. I would do anything - get another job, cut down on something, eat less food or cheaper food.
On the whole dogs and cats do not cost that much to keep (as long as they are fit and well and do not need a vet with their expensive charges). The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
Sad to say, but this is also seasonal!
lots of old dogs and cats abandoned at Christmas for new animals, and at this time of year lots abandoned so people don't have to look after them on holiday.
I worked for the RSPCA and we always kNEW whne local schools were on hols as the number of dumped but obviously cared for animals went up!Give yourself a Chistmas bonus £14 a week!
Total so far £280 -
People like that make me so ****** angry! I would honestly give the last of the food in the house to my cat.
Maybe these pets are better off without their so called responsible owners.0 -

Do people really dump their pets to go on holiday:eek: My dog must be seriously spoilt as when I do go on holiday I go camping and the holiday revolves around her:DTesco: £1361.19, Vanquis: £2644.73, Very: £563.08, Next: £1636.95, M&S: £1049.92. As of 5th February 2024. Slava Ukraini0 -
I think a lot of it is to do with vet bills.....if times are tough I can imagine pet insurance is one of the bills that aren't paid.....and as we know vets don't come cheap:eek: Also, not so easy now to increase your credit limit/ get a new card to pay an unexpected bill.0
