Major Credit Report Issues - UPDATED!

Hi,

I have just received my Credit Report from Equifax. I had a quick look through it and noticed that every application that my brother has made in his name shows up on my file, it also shows his credit card payment history! Now despite the fact that me and my brother know about each others money, it should definitely not be on my credit file! The only reason I can think why it is there is because we are twins, so the only thing different about our personal details is our first name (no middle names). His name appears inside *, which I believe is data that is possibly mine but has not been confirmed as mine. It is like *scottp* and then the relevant details. My mum is really mad about this, but we do not know who to complain to.
Also, I have live at my current address since Aug 2003, but on my credit report, the electoral data says 2003-2004 and then 2006 - 2008 (but 2003-2008 for my brother, which shouldn't be on there!) can I apply for this to be corrected? And who to? I would have thought it will be like that as 2006 is when i started full time work (Left School), so had to be registered on our electoral role.
Also, my bank has done quite a few searches on my file over the past year, one at the start of this year when I haven't applied for anything, how can I find out what they are for?

Sorry for all the questions, thanks!!

Hi Scottp, contact Equifax and expliant this situation to them, you need to get financialy dissociated from your brother. It should only take a couple of weeks maximum, here is the number that you need to call and follow the following instructions:

to ask a question or call on 0870 010 0583 between 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. From the telephone menu system, please select Option 1 for Credit File Advice Centre, then Option 2 for MyEquifax and enter 2671 when asked for the first four digits of your reference number.

    Good luck.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

What about the address thing? As I know that address verification can cause declines if there are any issues.

    Thanks!

Remember to check your credit report from the other agencies (Experian...) to make sure they haven't done the same thing.

thats already sorted, equifax was just the first one I received.

I have sent them a message through their online system (it says to do this in the first instance on the cover letter I got) so I am just waiting for a response from them. I will keep you updated!

    Thanks again!

I have received a response from Equifax. They have applied for a Notice of Disassociation from my brother, which will remove him off my file, and me off his.
In regards to the address details, they said I had to contact my local council as I was down as not at my address in 2005. The council says it cannot amend details of previous years registers and does not send letters out to CRA to amend this. I have sent a reply back saying that it is Equifax's responsibility, but I am not expecting miracles.

    Any ideas?

If the same systems are in place that were there when I worked for Equifax you would not need to inform the other credit reference agencies you want dissociated from your bother as the information was passed between them (but then it was with CCN and another one based in Liverpool which had an acronym too which I cannot recall right now), but it took 3 weeks.

If Equifax actioned a dissociation yesterday it should/would have gone through overnight and that part sorted.

Regarding the electoral roll your brothers details will drop off of the file you see , however when a company searches your file (with Equifax) they will see all of the public data at that address if they want it, a way to get to see it is either to put in a subject access request or use checkmyfile and you will not only see your brother but everyone else who has been on the electoral roll at your address over the past I would imagine now 6 years (following the introduction of the Data Protection Act) but it used to be 15'ish minimum.

As long as you were actually on the electrol roll for the time Equifax don't have you down for then you can get it updated, if you were not then they are right and your Council cannot fix it retrospectively. I would recommend asking you local Electroal Registration Office if they can tell you and if not then copies are avaiable in your local library.

Are there any possible variations of your address such as flat numbers that can appear in a different format or do you have a door number (without and A,B, etc.), street name, town/city, and postcode?

No address variations, its just a house number on a simple street.

The lady at the Electoral office said that I could go and look at the records, but I can only make notes, I cannot copy any documents.

The only explanation I have is that in 2003 we moved in to the House (new build) and then in 2006 I turned 17 (so 16 the previous year, BD is Oct) which is when my name shows up again. They have 2003 - 2004 and then 2006 - 2008 for me.

    Thanks for the help!

I would pay a trip to look at the documents for 2003-2004 and see how you details appear, and then look at the 2004-2005 register and see if you are on it in any shape or form, the staff in the office will help you. It is probably the quickest way to resolve it and in the meantime get a copy of your Experian and Callcredit report to see what they are showing.

If you are on it but there is some variation as to how you appear then you will need to ask Equifax to look you up under those details i.e address appears incorrectly, spelling mistake in your name, error with your date of birth. As if the details do not match at the moment Equifax won't tell you we think this is you on the register but we cannot be certain they will just tell you they cannot locate you.

    And then go from there.

Right might have to do that on Friday then, I want to get this sorted now so it won't cause me problems somewhere down the line!

    Thanks for your help.
