    Hi Leigh73,

I've been reading through this thread to see what credit limit you ended up with. Great news on that front.

Sorry to hear about what happened regarding the drinking. I've read countless threads on this forum of people struggling to overcome alcoholism. The thing to remember is that you are not alone. Not only will there be support groups in your area, but hopefully you'll be able to get lots of support from people on this forum.

It takes a lot to come out and say that you have a problem with drinking and in doing so you've taken your first big step.Giving the card to your GF is a good decision too.

I don't have any experience of alcoholism, and so don't want to advise you what to do next - I'm sure someone will be along soon that can give you some good advice. I guess I just wanted to say that there are many people who read these threads that just feel compelled to post so that you don't think you're alone.

Perhaps have a search on this forum for some threads related to alcoholism - perhaps that will help?

Remember that you're not alone and if you want to beat it, I'm sure you will (one thing I've gleened from reading the other threads is that it's much easier if you have a good support network around you).

    Good luck matey....

    Hi epsilondraconis,

Thank You so much for your kind words.

Your post has just moved me to tears..in a good way!

I think, the immense hangover that I had, coupled with the depths-of-despair depression which I felt last Sunday - Tuesday, after sobering up, has frightened me into taking action, and that's got to be a good thing.

I hadn't been able to see the wood for the trees re the Capital One worry, when logically, and looking at it calmly, it is solveable! I just can't believe how much money I wasted. :(

I did find a lot of kind hearted support, on the 'Giving up Alcohol' thread on the MSE forum, so maybe it's time to go back there later.

Also, I had a meeting with my counsellor today, at a local alcohol misuse charity, and they're cracking.

    Thanks again.

    Your post meant a lot.

    Sorry to hear this.
You know that most member of MSE will be glad to help you and support you if you ever need to talk to someone or need advice.
The Capital One card you can sort out, that need not worry you.
Try not to allow things to get on top of you, I know its hard but when you feel like you need space go for a walk or talk to your GF as I said in my last post.
Dont worry about Capital One card!

    Best of luck

    Hi setmefree,

Thanks for that info. Good to know.

I take it you didn't carry a balance of £449 in the first week of having the card though?! ..as I've stupidly done.
    :o

Actually it was about £350.00 ;) in the first week i fancied a new computer.
What i always do is pay at least two before the payment date is due.

I believe the minimum monthly amount is 4% of the total, so based on £500 your minimal payment would be £20..00, obviously then it would become more each month with the interest added, capitol one does give you the estimated interest on your statement for the following month based on the current balance.

So add your total balance to the estimated interest, then times it by 4%, that will give your your minimum payment, i hope this helps you..
Keep your chin up, and take all the help and support that is out there for you.

I can't help you work out the interest, but am so pleased to see you've posted again. With regards to the card, we've all been a bit daft at sometime; the real positive is that you are already working out ways to repay.
Sorry to hear about your situation. I think it's important to see your relapse drinking as a momentary blip rather than a failure. Don't beat yourself up too much as this an be counter-productive. Just start with the abstinence again on a Day 1 basis and accept as much help and support as you need from wherever it's offered.
    Wishing you well

Hi, Leigh. I have a Capital One Classic card too, you are charged 3% ( minimum £3 ) for cash withdrawals + interest from transaction date. Your interest on a balance of £449 will be about £12 a month. Minimum payment is 5%, in your case £24.

Hope it all works out for you Leigh73. Sometimes it helps to talk about things. Good to hear you're getting some good support. Recently my wife and I have been told we will never have kids - we're gutted to say the least. Sometimes it seems its just a case of making the most of whatever hand life deals you.

    Take it easy...

In reference to OSIS- what happens if your ex directory???

They will check online first (on the OSIS listing) and if you're not listed on there then they'll phone directory enquiries and ask through there. If you're listed as ex-directory then the operator will tell them so, hence confirming that you are listed on OSIS but ex-directory so as to not show. If you weren't listed at all then the operator would say that they can't find a match.

Can anyone confirm this, but I thought they made a cut out of the merchant fee anyway so using and clearing is a situation in which they still make money?

You're probably right, but I don't know that for sure. The merchant fee isn't making money out of the customer though, which is what I was referring to earlier.

    Understood Snooze!
It's just that I was thinking that overall they make money so do they really care if the balance is cleared in full or not?
