Gmail and Thunderbird

If you use thunderbird to access your emails, aren't losing out on the benefits of having a gmail account eg grouped conversations

    I would assume so

I guess it's all about what people are used to and what they personally prefer.

I've had yahoo as my default email system for years - when I click on a mailto link it opens up yahoo in my browser. I might change to gmail soon.

I've tried 'em all. Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird. I've just never been able to adjust to that kind of email client

I know what you mean, I've had a Yahoo account for a long time as well, I've just opened a Gmail account, but can't make up my mind whether I prefer it yet as there is so much more associated with the yahoo account.

I have my work Eclipse ISP account set up thro Thunderbird as I don't like the Eclipse email account.

Both Yahoo and Hotmail are working on catching up with Gmail:

But nothing looks as good as gmail.

I did a survey for yahoo last week and they asked me to tick the features I'd like to see. One of the ones listed was have multiple email addresses on the one account.

I think the first to offer that will have me for life. I'll be finally able to have several email addresses assigned to the same account without having to mess abut with forwarding etc.

Not entirely sure I understand what you want, but doesn't Thunderbird give you some 95% of it today? You can have any number of POP accounts [from Yahoo, GMAIL, MSN, etc etc] all in one place, with options on where you want to store your items. E.g. you could have all your 'sent' mail in one single folder, or all in their individual folders, or any combination you like.

But not much use if you use several computers throughtout the day. Gmail also has the big advantage of using tags (labels) to you can cross-index mail.

You only have to use tags for a short period of time through sites like flickr or del.icio.us to see the huge advantage over folder hierarchies and I'm amazed that yahoo and msn aren't planning to go down this route

    Granted........ :o

I was assuming a single computer, or a single computer to deal with emails, at least. Probably applies to 90%+ of the folks lingering on MSE.
  • Gmail will allow multiple addresses in a fashion.... if you get mail sent to username+tag@gmail.com - it arrives no problem and can be filtered in the normal way.... if you want something else username+tag2@gmail.com..... does that make sense ? (if not, I blame my freezer that I'm currently turbodefrosting)
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary and those that don't

In many cases it helps if you say where you are - someone with local knowledge might be able to give local specifics rather than general advice

My point was if Gmail is so good why would you want to access it thro thunderbird?
I also filled in the Yahoo survey last week.

Because at times, I want to do my mail when not connected (travelling, laptop)
  • I thought Outlook was the only e-mail client that you could use with web-based mail accounts? And even then - only hotmail.
