Sorry to read your bad news.
I had a similar thing happen with my council tax dd.
Council inadvertantly stopped the dd.
Like you I didn't spot the payments weren't going out, for the same reason you gave.
The information I received from Citizens Advice was that I had to pay it all, as even though a mistake was made by council, the onus to make sure payments were being made was on myself, which was a bit hard to swallow at the time, because it coincided with a tv advert campaign for direct debits taking away the hardship of making sure payments were met.
They suggested I approach the council with my own terms regarding an offer of increased dd payments to suit me over the next 2 years.
Which I did and they agreed. All now sorted.0
