A few years ago I worked at Sainsburys on night replenishment for ten weeks. I left after a bust-up with an ‘experienced’ time-served member of staff who was breaking all the cold chain rules. Those rules had been drummed into me at the induction session. I’m all for a little bit of leeway, but this was bad. Two hours out of chill for things like egg mayonnaise. Ever wondered why you felt ill after eating an in date product? The date is only relevant if it’s been treated correctly.
I talked to the night manager about the problem, but seniority won out. They had terrible trouble getting staff and then treated you like dirt. All the old hands would be out the back playing cards or smoking while the newbies worked their backsides off trying to get everything done.
I moved on to Tesco. Just as bad with the food and incredibly hierarchical. I kept my mouth shut there as I needed the money.
They were next door to an M&S store, and I got a job there leading up to Christmas and New Year. You had to work hard there, but they had the edge on all the quality issues. The rules DID matter there. However the food waste issues discussed above were obvious. I think it was snob value to them, and discount labels were not ‘the thing’. There were staff sales but that tended to be the damaged stuff. The meat and dairy went into the crusher skip AND was sprayed with purple dye to put off the treasure hunters.
My wife cried when I told her what they did. There we were desperately trying to make ends meet, and they threw out perfectly good food that was edible.
That was all three/four years ago, and I can’t say what goes on today. I did go into the Tesco store last week though. I picked up an avocado pack and my thumb went straight through one. It was rotten, and so were a lot more. All well in date though…
And finally, tramps are human beings. Over the years I’ve met quite a few. Without exception they all had jobs and families and it was all taken away from them. Redundancy and marriage break ups were the main reasons. One chap I met lived in a bus shelter on the A21 at Hastings. He had worked on Concorde development in the 70s at Filton. There but for the grace of God, eh?0 -
Thankyou for that post, it is upsetting isn't it, all the blatant waste, and SO right we are all humans. I have heard a lot of homeless/'vagrants' or so called are ex armed forces.
it just goes to show what a lot of 'greenwash' all this dont waste food malarkey is from the government, they are telling us householders to not waste but they KNOW what the stores are doing.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

My Mum works at Marks and Spencer and they have a waste shop. Any food nearing its sell by date or 'damaged' is sold to staff at greatly reduced rates. Eg - my mum gets 2 pts of milk for 2p at the end of her shift!! Shame she does not live near me......MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year. Overpayment Total to date: £414.26:jMortgage start 28/9/07 £46,217.00 :TMortgage balance as of 25/05/11 £24,490.58 :T
Interest saved as of 25/05/11: £2,849.84 Projected term reduction as of 25/05/11: 9 years 11 months0 -
I used to work for M&S a few years back and all raw meat, poultry and fish which was out of date and not sold to staff was kept in a bin in the freezer and was picked up by a company called PDM. According to their website, the waste would be used to generate electricity. We also had staff shop but sadly, a lot was also thrown away. Charities were allowed to come and collect food but I heard there was a lot of red tape. They would have to be visited first to ensure they had proper facilities to cook the food and they would be subject to visits to ensure the were using the food before the use by date. Not sure if this was true or not. As for flowers, they were sold to staff or if we had a lot, we would call the local hospital and nursing homes and ask them if wanted to collect them. This was a few years ago. long before Plan A. I guess it depends on the store, but i wish they would just give the food away at the end of the night. I know its great getting it half/quarter price, but its annoying paying for food when they are going to bin it anyway!0

The store I worked in wouldn't reduce food as it 'runed our image of the premium branding' and they didn't want the same people in every evening buying all the reduced stuff when they never shopped in there normally anyway.0

I think Sainsburys and M&S definitely go for the ‘snob’ customer.
I think we will shortly be seeing their downfall for the very same reason…0 -

As I have mentioned before, most M&S stores DONATE the waste to CHARITY!!!!!
People need to stop bashing M&S. At the end of the day the store is a business not a charity! - They are here to make money. The company has a PLAN A policy, ie recycling, cutting down on food packaging which you can find on the M&S website!
Also, it is complete rubbish that M&S go for the 'snob' customer. I bet you have not checked out the 'outstanding value range' of clothing - ie school clothing, bedding etc. Most of the time the food is on offer, ie dine in for £10 is on every two weeks now!0
