SAT NAV - Whats the best value for money?

Hi there

I'm after a Sat Nav for my car, but there seems to be too many to choose from!

Would like it to have Uk & Europe, but can't decide between TomTom or Garmin.

Seems to me they all do the same thing but TomTom seems to be slightly dearer.

Is that just because of the 'name' or are they actually better?
As far as i was aware, Garmin is pretty good name as well!

Any help and advice would be gratefully appreciated

Regards
Insp Monkfish

    Both are very good..

I'm a huge fan of TomTom though, and onto my second one now.... I have the 520T (The T gives me the ariel for the RDS Traffic Information, which i find invaluable!)

Also, with TomTom, you can hook it up to your computer, and get map updates nearly daily, with the mapshare function, where people like you and me, state errors on the maps, and upload them to tomtom, then other users can download that information. I'm unsure if Garmin have a system like that..

If you're not going to use it on a daily basis, it might be worth getting one on cost... Amazon are usuall cheap, and i think play.com sell them too (quidco!)

    thanks for info M

well thats the thing, i only need it for the odd long journey every now and then. Certainly won't be an everyday thing.

For that reason, i don't want to overspend. Seems to be around 120/130 quid to get Europe maps included as well (but i'm only going to need that to get to Disneyland Paris once a year!)

i bought the tom tom 910 as i wanted US and Canadian maps as well.....i certainly find the foreign use of it the most useful.
mines a great product and has the additional advantage of being able to use it for handsfree calling and receipt of text's etc
btw some companies were getting shot of these due to the new range

if you do get an old range, you will have old maps..
now, i think you'll be able to update once within 30 days of buying it, to the latest maps... tomtom has a map guarantee, but i don't know if it applies to the x10 range... so you might end up with 3 year old maps!

In the last 3 years my run to work has gone from 45 miles to 33miles, so thats how much something can change in 3 years.
